Is it true that it doesnt really matter what you learn in college because none of it will be applied to a future in Ibanking. So, when looking at schools, say Princeton v. Harvard, go for the more famous one? (If you would fit in and be happy at either one).

usually the two go hand in hand

in any case, as far as banking goes, analysts don’t have to be the most knowledgeable.

prestige is far more important for banking

IB have target schools they recruit from because 1) some senior person went to school A, 2) firms had good experience recruiting from certain school, 3) they look to those top tier schools to weed out candidates for them. The last point is the most important one. They know to get into those top schools, most students would have certain SAT scores and GPA. Those target schools wouldn’t have the prestige if they didn’t admit only the best students. IB do not want to waste time by sending a team of people to a school to recruit if they couldn’t get good applicants.

I would agree with the above poster for the most part. Prestige/school status is the most important thing when it comes to banking. Once you get into the target school zone, then banks will further weed through candidates using GPA, contacts within a firm, work experience, club experience, coursework, etc. That said, it is the students from target and semi target schools who readily receive the glances from bankers/recruiters.

To your second point, while some skills learned in u grad will be helpful - for example, some math, finance, accounting, eco, etc, once you move past these disciplines most of it will obviously not be terribly relevant to IB (at least not on the surface). School name is definitely more helpful than majoring in accounting vs math vs finance. Once you get into the school, however, pursue what interests you.

Between H and and P, however, both are absolute target schools -go to where you will enjoy yourself the most and major in what is most interesting to you. If you still want to do banking, just be able to link some skill sets, explain why IB and keep up a solid GPA. The opportunities will be there.
