Hi,

I'm currently sophomore in EE program. I have taken two EE classes so far, and they are analog circuits and C++ programming... but I find non of them very interesting (programming is OK but circuits...phwww)

I'm thinking of switching my major to IE right now, because I always have considered IE and most importantly I really enjoyed econ classes that I have taken so far here..(I heard econ and IE share some similar charactors)

but many people around me advised not to do IE, because many engineers look down on IE..and I heard IE is often considered as a unnecessary major.. also any people in EE advised me to stay in because it gets better when we get to study signals & computers

This is big dicision and will bring drastically different outcome

any advices will be very appreciated
thanks

I was doing EE, then switched to IE. So far, I am very happy. It really depends on what you want to do and your career goals. I did well in my EE classes, however, i realize that it wasnt what i want to do at all. In IE it is basically like a mix of bussiness and engineering, which is exactly what i was looking for. Essentially, you're like a psuedo bussiness major with a lot of quantitative background. Job prospect seems good, a lot of grads go into high paying careers such as consulting, finance. Some go into traditional IE field such as semi conductor manufacturing, or logistics working for UPS, etc. To sum it up, it depends on what you want to do. If you can tell a little bit more about your career goals, graduate school ,etc, I might be able to give you a more helpful response.

and yea, who cares if they look down on IE lol...I get that a lot.

Take a look at the career options that Cal IEOR grads take. See if those are what your interested in.

good luck, PM me if you need more info.

Thanks alot cpchang,
I really appreciate it

any more advices?

you can do EE with a concentration in signal processing, programming, image processing, digital topics. EE is not just circuits.
