Is EECS a predominantly male major? My husband who is a mechanical engineer himself is very concerned that our DD is applying to EECS and not to CS.
I would imagine both EECS and L&S CS have more male than female students (and they share the same CS courses). Based on enrollments in upper division CS versus EE courses, it appears that most EECS majors emphasize CS.
EECS is generally viewed as harder to get admitted to as a frosh, but students are in the major if admitted. For L&S CS, frosh admission is to L&S undeclared; students need to complete the prerequisites with a 3.3 GPA (may change) to be able to declare the L&S CS major.
And my understanding is that the average grades for most of these prerequisites are either B or B-.
Ballerina, that should not be a concern because when she goes to work there will be more male as well.
Currently 3rd year EECS major. Here are my HS stats as requested by OP:
- 2350 SAT
- 780 & 800 for Physics & Math
- 4.0 GPA
- Various varsity athletics (team captain for one of them)
- Scouts
- Student government
- Assorted volunteering
- Physics Research
- Various regional & national level awards
