EFC and FAFSA

The college my daughter will be attending has completely met her EFC. Even though they require BOTH FAFSA and the CSS Profile, it appears they used only MY INFORMATION from the FAFSA (to the exact EFC figure). In other words, they did not use my ex husband's information at all. It took me weeks and weeks to get the figures from him so he could fill out his portion of the CSS Profile Form. To put it bluntly, he hadn't filed tax forms in eight years! I begged, pleaded, etc. with this person and he finally did it when I said the COLLEGE NEEDS IT! We have been divorced since my daughter was three so maybe this is why they ignored his information. Here is my question. Since they did not use his information, do I have to go through with the begging and pleading for the numbers next year? Should I call the college directly to ask them? It was very unpleasant the first time to get him to file and I am sure it will be the second time too. I would rather avoid the whole scene. Thanks.

You will need to ask the college what they will require for your daughter’s financial aid info as a returning student. They will tell you whether you need to file the non-custodial parent Profile. If they say no…then it’s no. If they say yes…then yes…you will need to (again) ferret out the information from her father.

Different colleges have different requirements. You can also check on the college’s financial aid website section to see what is required for returning students. The info might be there.
