Does anyone know how decisions on who gets into this program are made? It seems different than the other programs in the honors college.
I think Jay (program head) decides. You’ll have to write a statement to show why you’d be a good fit for the program once admitted to Honors, but I’m almost positive either he or Dean (first name, not title) decide. Gemstone is the difficult one to get into.
If you have any questions about EIP, I’m a former EIPer (switched to University Honors)! Feel free to ask away.
@Vctpry do you have any thoughts on ILS versus Gemstone? My son is trying to decide which to put first on his preference sheet. Seems to me that competing with a bunch of premeds in ILS is a recipe for disaster as far as your GPA but he loves biology. He is also excited about the possibility of a group research project in Gemstone but realizes that there is no guarantee that he would end up with a project he really likes.
@Vctory could you share your experiences in EIP? Also, was there something about it that made you switch to University honors?
@terp2B Sure! Is your son premed? If so, ILS is almost definitely the place for him. It’s a lot more technical, but from what I can tell it attracts a bunch of science geniuses–their median MCAT score was above Harvard Med School’s median, IIRC. If he’s not premed, or is a premed but is a bit more social (more outgoing/works well with others), then Gemstone is a great place for him!
@millikan The program’s fantastic. I met consultants, CEO’s, and even had some of one of our classes’ speakers’ products (we all got free Mission BBQ served to us by the CEO!). It’s a great program. However, it didn’t fit with my personal career goals, so I made the switch.
Hello! @Vctory . So, there are 75 people part of EIP. Is that 75 because of low demand or fixed supply (spots)?
@Vctory
Hi, I’m an international admitted to the Honors college. I’ve given my preference as EIP ( actually I wrote to Jay and the committee to reconsider my application for honors and then I was admitted)
I wanted to know is the program popular among CS majors ? I’m a CS major and am looking forward to meet new people interested in solving problems and innovating.
