Electrical Engineering

hi what subjects do colleges look at for electrical engineering?

i am taking electronics 2 in my senior year and i am good at math expect my grades took a huge dump in my junior and soph year .

so i was thinking maybe if its possible to like apply to school such as UCM and then maybe try transferring to UCLA or something else?

any thoughts.

if u dont have the stats to make UCLA out of h.s., and u're absolutely certain u want to go there, transfer from a community college, UCLA electrical engineering is very competitive to get in. I honestly doubt that u cud transfer in from merced, they give higher priority to community college students. From community college, if u can pull 3.8-3.9 u'll have a pretty good chance.

hrm. I'm guessing you're in high school? If so, you don't need ANY electronics courses. All you need is pretty good grades to get in. You can try transferring, although I don't think UCM has an EE program. I'm sure you'll get into another UC (R,D,I,SC,SB) which will have an EE program. UC Merced is very new and doesn't have an EE program yet.

take a look at unggio83's post. cc is a very good alternative.

phpguru

yea i am in HS .. i know i cant make it to top tier UCs like UCB, UCSD , UCLA , UCSB maybe UCD which is really where i want to do to. UCLA was just an example. CC is in like the last option.

any other ideas?

im transferring this fall as EE to ucsd, uci or ucla (physics)

i think out of h.s. the universities are looking at the whole package and wut u can bring to the university, thats why u guys have so many more extra curriculars, clubs, and activities. i dont even think the universities care about major preparation as much as overall rigor of ur AP classes, cuz about 80% of freshman change their majors.

whereas if u transfer for engineering they focus purely on the grades cept for ucla. i know at UCSD they don't even read the application essay, i got in strictly on grades w/ no extra curriculars. i know a buddy who got into uc berkeley EECS w/no extra curriculars (had a 3.9) but rejected from ucla.

try to focus on developing ur logical reasonin and analytical skills, take as much math and physics as you can. these 2 subjects will the basis of any engineering major. i'd also drop the electronics course, cuz u'll probably forget it by the time you see it again in college. understand that any engineering major has an intense workload.

lastly if in the future u somehow got accepted into an elite engineering school (berkeley, ucla) make sure u're at about the same mental level as the other students going into that school, else u'll graduate at the bottom of ur class (engineering classes are curved). i mention this cuz i know a few ppl who had 4.0's in h.s. then started getting D's and C's at berkeley EECS.

yea well i am already at the end of my junior year level and i think i might have a better chance at Computer Engineering as i took CS during my HS.

If you decide to transfer, its all about the grades. I have horrible ECs but I have a good GPA so I got into decent colleges. EE/CS/CE is quite competitive, so you might need 3.8+ to secure a chance at ucla or berkeley. Going to UCM and trying to transfer might undermine your effort.
