Electronic drum set In the Dorms?

Hey Everyone! This might seem random to some of you but its huge to me lol.. So here comes my question, is it unreasonable to bring an electronic drum set to ur college dorms? Is there enough space and/or will the roomate get ****ed lol? So if you know anyone else at your college that has this set up or know about space issues please enlighten me!!! Thanks Everyone!

I suppose it depends on the school but many dorms prohibit playing instruments except in practice rooms. What schools are you speaking of?

I'm in you're same boat; I'd love to get an electronic drumset to practice on; the dilemma is, in my dorm room, I have to choose between having the drumset there, or the bed there. Sleep is the priority for now.

haha Pang i hope that isnt my situation, If so ill just get like a loft bed and maybe put it under or would that be lame? Or u kno i could just throw my roomates bed out rite haha

Ummm, your roommate will kill you, drums will take up a lot of space. you have to SHARE the room, and the whole thing, you just cant divide it in half and say that side belongs entirely to you. That would be like dividing your living room at home in half and not letting your sibling on your side. You dont own the refridgerator, tv, couch or whatever just because it is on the same side of the room as your bed. If you really want to do bring it, call him and ask him what he thinks first, and allow him an easy way to tell you that he doesn't like it, or you guys will not get along.

Absolutely no way should you bring drums to practice in your room. Now only it's inconsiderate to your roommate but everyone else within the sound range of the drums. If you want to practice, do it in one of the practice rooms.

some of you need to chill out.

one of my friends brought a electronic drumset with her to college, one of those things that's like a quiet skeleton of a set. she talked about it with her roommate before they moved in, and it's working out okay. yeah it takes up space but it doesn't dominate the room or anything. I imagine it's sort of like practicing saxophone or something that's not as loud as, you know, a regular drumset :)

as long as you're not practicing late at night or when the roommate's studying or any other annoying inopportune time, it should be fine.

Wow Okay I totally Agree with Morada too, not that I'm Bias or anything :)

Okay First off Electric drum sets arent that big especially if I could put it under a loft bed or something. Secondly, Electric drum sets make barely any noise at all, you can only hear the drum set if you either A) have the headphones in your ears or B) If the drum set is plugged into an amp. I understand it might make fractional amounts of noise but barely any at all, I would say no less annoying than typing on a keyboard but its not like I'm gonna be playing at 3 in the morning soo... Lastly, I totally agree with all of you guys in asking to make sure its all rite with the rommie just to be repectful so I will definetly do so!
Thanks Everyone, Please continue to post if you have different thoughts or know anyone with an electronic set in the dorms!!!

it could also be a really great wayto get to know people, "dude I have drums in my room!" you can get together an jam with people with other instruments

I had a friend in college who was an RA and he had electronic drums in his room. You're allowed to have them because you can control the volume. :)

Thank you, Equine and Fender Girl!
I will definetly make sure theres enough room and crap too though but the roomie better be cool with it haha cause i have like 6 guitars and 2 basses too haha but i think ill just bring 1 guitar and bass or he might kill me... Anyways thanks guys

I don't have any idea how much room you'd need for an electronic drum set. What I can tell you though is that many dorm rooms are tiny - very tiny, and even with a bed lofted up, it might not create enough space. For instance.. my single dorm room was approximatly 8' by 10'. Once you shove a bed, desk and dresser in there, the room was so small that I could reach everything I needed without getting out of my computer chair.

I'd look up on your future school's website how big the dorm rooms are, that'll give you a better idea of what you can fit in and what you can't

Okay, you have not lived in a dorm room before, which is fine, so you are going to have to take my word for it. they are really SMALL. They are pretty much designed after 19th century prisons. Even if you loft the bed, there won't be that much room, and I would loft it anyway, because if you don't, people will come in and sit on it.

I dont think the noise is inconsiderate, but taking up that much space is, especially if you don't give your roommate a chance to give you his HONEST opinion. Also, he might be alright with it at first, but it probably will start to pi$$ him off eventually. You have to realize how small dorms are, and they are not only places to sleep. You also have a desk, and hopefully a couch and a TV, so it's like a tiny bedroom, office, and living room that you have to share. If you put the drums under the loft you guys will be sitting on the floor or desk chairs when you watch TV, and believe me, LESS people will be in your room. People congregate in rooms that feel the largest and have the most sitting space. Not only do I think its a bad idea for yourself, I really do think your roommate will eventually kill you.

You can probably survive with just the guitar for a year, most schools do have music halls and practice rooms that would have drums. My friend's roommate brought a guitar and an amp, and just that takes up a lot of space in the dorm. (And don't assume that there will be room in the closet for it cuz there probably won't be) If your school has larger sophomore dorms, maybe they would fit in there next year, or you could wait until you move into an apartment or house your sophomore or junior year, it wouldn't kill you. However, Freshmen generally get put in the worst smallest dorm rooms.

i think the dorm size really is the deciding factor. I'm a freshman and my dorm is 11'X17', and if I lofted my bed I would deffintly have room for a drum set, but if your going to be in one of the teeny tiny ones it would be impossible.

electronic drums are coooool

bring it, it's quiet

ask your roommate first

if you don't want your drums, send them to me. i'll put them in my dorm room.

Dorm rooms vary very much by school and within schools. Basically, to find out if size is a limiting factor, you have to know where you're going to live. I think an electronic drum set would be fine, especially if you could fold it and stick it in the closet after you play it. if you're going to get one of those super roland kits with 6 drum pads and 4 cymbal pads, that would most likely be rediculous.

Well Actually Drab I have one of those roland kits lol but barely takes any space so as long as the room is big enough and the roomie is cool with it om definetly gonna bring it. Plus like you said it varies from school to school so I will definetly have to check the rooms out before bringing the set. I figure if I put it sideways under my Loft bed and my desk next to it I should be fine but will see...

Haha great. I always loved playing those at guitar center, but I haven't ever purchased one. Maybe soon. Do you have the one with four tom pads, or three?

haha well Its the Roland TD 6s so u can look it up at musicians friend or whatever. It has a mesh snare and 3 toms and its like soooo siick lol

I prefer acoustic instruments over electric, but one thing I looooove about electronic drumsets is the 'hip-hop' preset. it sounds so funny. okay.
