Eligibility for Transferring to a UC

Hi,
I'm a prospective transfer student in community college working toward transferring to a UC. Although, I'm not sure if I am eligible to apply. I currently have 25 credits completed but at the end of this Fall 2013 semester I will have 41 credits and at the end of the Spring 2014 I will have over 60 credits. I know that transfer students can enter the UCs at a junior level with the requirement that they complete their 60 credits by the end of Spring prior to the Fall semester they wish to transfer but do I have to have a certain amount of credits now to apply to the UCs? Like a minimum of 30? Or was that only for consideration of the TAG? I want to apply but I'm not sure if I can. Can someone help me?

I’m not aware of any minimum number of units required to apply and I have never heard of one. I think you’ll be fine.

But just to be sure, you should talk to your counselor. I’m sure he/she will repeat what I said, but it’s good to double-check these things.

you MUST have 30 units to even apply to a UC prior to the end of fall, and the maximum units allowed to be considered from the Spring semester are 17.

So you would not be eligible to even apply for admission right now unless you somehow got an additional 5 units by November 30th.

It is possible to get those 5 units but it’s hard, you could do a Credit By Examination, or if you have CLEP, or AP credit from High School.

Otherwise you’re out of luck.

^This is wrong, you can apply regardless of how many units you have right now, as long as you have 60 semester units by the end of spring.

You can absolutely apply! However, some campuses may consider 19+ units in the spring to be a heavy course load and may deny you admission for that reason. I would look into taking a winter intersession if possible. If you are denied for that reason you can appeal campus decisions after you complete the requirements by the end of spring. Pending space, schools may reconsider you for fall 2014.
