Elite College Wait List News Flash!!

It was reported this morning in a N.Y. Times article by Tamar Lewin that some elite colleges would be pulling much larger numbers from their wait list!
Due to changes in admissions policies and larger numbers of applicants this year a few elite colleges still need students to fill remaining spots. This includes Harvard.
According to to the article Princeton will pull 90, Harvard up to 175, Penn 90 and Yale 45. Some other elite college did not wish to state numbers. This is expected to affect many other university classes as students change their college choices.

May 9, 2008

It will be interesting to see the domino effect this will have on a number of colleges with students defecting to other schools. Some such as Stanford and UVA which are pretty much on target with their numbers are keeping their waitlists open or "extended", as are such schools as Dartmouth and Bowdoin, also expecting some possible losses. I'm surprised by Harvard's number, but the strategy was sound given the unpredictability this year. The shifting around of students may actually go on into the summer. I think this is one year where we will see a particular impact with the waitlists.

It sounds like a total of around 400 students will be offered spots at Harvard, Yale, Princeton and Penn. I wonder if any USC admits will jump ship? In our house, we're anxiously awaiting any news of Spring admits being moved up to Fall. Would love to hear any theories about whether the elite waitlist phenomenon will trickle over (note I didn't say "down") to USC.

It will be interesting to see if the trickle down as these school's waitlist spots are accepted will have an appreciable effect on enrollment numbers at USC? Any guesses?

LOL, x-posted FauxNom.

My D is on the Harvard waitlist. We have talked a little of what to do IF (big IF) she was offered a place. It would be a terribly difficult decision, but as of last night she believes she would stick with USC, for many reasons. But I don't know. I've heard H may start calling today. I don't know what to feel.
(She was also on the Columbia list but declined the spot)

Best of luck Sequoia! I know this is a tough decision for your family

Oh, Sequoia, this opens up such possibilities! Of course your buddies here wish the best for your D, but over the past few months as our kids received more and more good news from USC (and we celebrated together on cc) I admit that I began to get mom-fantasies of your d and my s walking (biking?) over to their TO classes together from Arts/Humanities. lol!!! Not to add any pressure or anything. heh.

lol madbean. I've been fantasizing the same...our kids and us moms meeting and getting to know each other in real life. My D is so grateful for USC's scholarships, that they want her, and funnily all along there have been these little "signs", silly synchronistic things like walking into a store where colors happen to be all in gold/crimson, running into her department head by coincidence, other incidences, that she takes as it's "meant to be". She's happy with the decision, as am I.

Just read on the H board that decisions may not be out till June. That late would impact a lot of other schools too, meaning other waitlists may not be decided on till July/August.

(For all we know your S and my D may have already met on facebook lol)

We would miss you Sequoia! But we'd still let you come to our CC mom meetup :) I really hope you don't have to wait til June - if unheaval is going to come, might as well get it over with.

There is definitely a domino effect, and the dominoes are starting to fall. For example, the Tufts admissions office stated that they do NOT expect to invite anybody off their waitlist this year. However, if you go over to the Tufts board you will see at least two examples of admissions from the waitlist.

And my friend's waitlisted D just got a call from WashU--and decided to accept the spot--leaving behind her previously accepted spot at Tufts. Where will the musical chairs end?

Good news good news...

I really think that a lot of colleges must have underestimated the economy and the fact that the number of applications each student does goes up every year...

More Information from N.Y.Times Article.....
Here are a few more numbers from the article: Amherst offered 15 on Wed. and may offer 10 more. Swarthmore and Pomona each planned to take 15 to 20 from their waiting lists.

geez! 20 for pomona is like 5% of the class! thats one LARGE underestimation. then again there are only like 350-400 students in each class compared to a university with 15,000+ is totally different. 5% of USC would be gigantic - like 130 people!

i have to say, the one school i really regret not applying to is pomona...not because of this waitlist business, but just because i wish i had taken the chance.

This is taken from threads on the admissions forum. An article stated that Univ. of North Carolina will take 238 from their wait list! Johns Hopkins will take 35.

Students have reported in the last two days being taken off the list from Smith, Penn, Duke, Middlebury, Notre Dame and Emory.
