Elliot School

Any thoughts or opinions about the Elliot School? Career placement? Internships?

Great school, more organized in terms of advising, very difficult, a lot is expected from the students, well known, awsome internships in Washington. Most students are happy with the school, but they never sleep.

Could you give me a sample of the type of classes freshmen take when they are interested in the Elliot School?

They are so numerous that you will habe to go to their site and check, where it says: 4 yr academic plan 2009

I’m a freshman in the Elliott School so I’ll give you my take on things.

First off, in 2007 the Elliott School was ranked #10 in the country for international relations programs. I think that pretty much speaks for itself.
Freshman year everyone in the Elliott School takes Introduction to International Affairs. It’s a huge lecture - 300 people - and the professor who teaches it wrote the textbook students use. It’s a good class because students are forced to use the city - for example, we just did a G20 simulation on the economic crisis and part of the project was going to a country’s embassy and interviewing one of their ministers. It was pretty sweet. Some other typical freshman classes are comparative politics, intro to American gov, intro anthropology classes, a language (3 years proficiency required), university writing, psychology sociology history etc. Mostly filling general requirements.
Advising is really good in Elliott - in IAFF 005 (the class above), one of the assignments is to draw up a 4 year plan of EVERY class you will take and meet with an adviser about it.
The Elliott School also has a ton of awesome events/speakers almost every day that are open to all Elliott students, ranging from development to economics to politics. Also, from what I’ve heard, employers (NGOs, embassies, etc) LOVE Elliott interns.

I want this school!!!

My son was just accepted to the Elliot School and I have a question about Thurston. Based on the dorm description on GWs website, it sounds like everyone in Elliot lives in Thurston. Do kids in the Elliot School live anywhere besides Thurston? Is Mitchell lonely for a freshman of is it a good alternative to Thurston?

its not that all the elliott school kids live in thurston…its that most of the entire freshmen class lives there. it holds 1,100 people so that along with some in Mitchell, and some on the Vern accounts for pretty much all of the freshmen class.

I got into CCAS. If after my freshman year I want to change majors to something in Elliot, how hard is the change? Does the school make it easy to switch from school to school?

Theorycraft, there is a full set of requirements to transfer, and until you don’t take those courses, you are not allowed to transfer. Besides, you need a certain GPA. I am not certain which GPA you need.

Thank you Multitasker.

Are there classes in Elliot for freshman that have a small student size (less than 20)?

No, the avg freshman class for Elliott is about 40 or so. Some very large classes for intro, could be as large as 120-150, but that is the exemption. Most classes after that are in the 25 to 40 mark

Do all GW students have the same distribution requirements or do they differ by school? What are the distribution requirements, or core requirements for the Elliot School? Thanks.

strawberry: go to the Elliott School of Public Affairs webpage and look at the “4 yr plan” section, it will give you an idea of the courses to take. Not easy courses though…
good luck!

Thanks! So there are no distribution requirements that everyone at GW has to take?

Is it more difficult to be accepted in the Elliot School than CCAS?

I am deciding between International Affairs at the Elliott School with a focus on Economics and International Business in the GW School of Business. Which school is harder to get into? Which will have harder courses?

I believe Elliott would be harder, although I am not completely familiar with Business School

Elliott School is very difficult to get into but both programs are very challenging.
Also, with the IA- Int’l Econ focus, it is possible to take a number of courses in the international business department that count for the major.
