No thurston is not that bad. Thurston gets a bigger reputation than deserved I think. The majority of the time you will be able to study in your room. a lot of time it depends on your roommates and your neighboors but its usually not a problem unless you are trying to study on a friday or saturday night.

My S is interested in GWU, but doesn't know which school to apply to.
He's gifted in English and Spanish, but avoids math to the best of his ability.
His SAT's and GPA qualify him to apply to all but the most selective schools.

He's interested in combining studying English/Spanish, Creative Writing, and we're encouraging him to minor in business/marketing.

Other colleges he's applying to are BC, Northeastern and PC.

He's a great writer and has copyrighted a few of his songs already.
(He's lead singer/songwriter for his locally popular rock band.)

What are your recommendations on where he should apply at GWU?
Thanks for taking the time. I realize you're on break and probably won't reply until after the new year, but that's OK.

My D was admitted to Williams College last year and the input from this board was a great resource!

Thanks!

Unfortunately we are not on break yet, its the price we pay for starting so late.

I would encourage him to apply to the Elliot school of International Affairs. My reasoning would be because there are almost no math requirements (3 hours of math total) and because its language intensive so he could take a lot of spanish and be fulfilling requirements. Also, its alot easier to switch from Elliot to CCAS and based on his dislike of math I don't think he really wants to do Engineering. Thats the best advice I can give but if any other current students are reading this what are your two cents?

How independent is Elliot from columbian? Is Elliot tougher/more prestigious?
How big is the student body? Are classes separated from those of the regular college
also,I read that classes are a lot like high school re-runs? Do you know if that is common to almost all schools during the freshman year and it gets toughr ventually or is GW always easy?

hey seth what bands are coming in to play at gw? i heard taking back sunday played on campus or something is there a good scene for concerts and stuff like that?

As far as concerts go the only school sponsered even that we have had so far was common the first week of school for Fall Fest. There are a few clubs around DC that draw good bands (chili peppers came earlier this year). The concert seen is pretty good but its not around campus its at different clubs in DC or in virginia and Maryland but they are all metro accessible. I just saw Sister Hazel in Virginia this week so bands definitely come to DC.

As far as Elliot v. Columbian I am not sure how much tougher it is. I am fairly sure that Elliot is more prestigous but as far as harder to get into I do not know. Your GCR's are going to overlap and you will have a mix of people from all schools but as you get into classes that are more specific to your major there will tend to be less of an overlap.

I have a couple of classes that kind of overlapped with material that I has in high school but my teachers take different approaches so its kind of a fresh look. That said, the classes that overlap are not necessarily easy either. Like in most things it depends on the class. Hopefully there is an older student on here who can tell you more about the rigour as time goes on but so far my freshman year I think I have been challenged but it has been more by volume than by material. I have written more, longer papers this year that I have before and that has been the real challenge.

Hope that helps, back to final studying.
