Elliott school freshman

willing to answer questions....

e-mail me at ik2004ny@aol.com and
I'll do my best to help answer "inside"
questions on life at GW.

i have to bump this up....i haven't heard from nearly enough people to keep me from facebooking in-between studying. lol.

i have to bump this up....i'm sitting here at the IGIS at the elliott school and my work study job can be very boring....ask me some questions people!!!!!

I'm in CAS but I'm guessing you might be able to tell me a bit about the social life at GW? Also - how friendly did you find the campus when you first came?
Thanks!

And also how is safety around the campus? Ever felt scared around campus?

one of their deals is that they something like 8 different agencies have jurisdiction on campus...it was campus police, the metro police, the cia, the fbi, the nsa, and several others that i cant remember. they say its safe and use it as a draw.

social life at GW?
The social scene here all depends on housing and the type of person
you are....basically, Thurston (as I'm sure you've heard others say before)
is the "party" dorm, as in you'll always find a party in a room, people going
to clubs, loud music, beer cans laying around, etcc. BUT, it's one of the
best social environments (if you can hide in the library or basement to study) for meeting a bunch of people. The new Potomac house is kind of boring socially...and the Vern is the worst place you can be (too secluded). Most of
your friends you'll meet on your floor/dorm (clubs and classes also of course)
so it's best to surround youself with people you'll be most likely comfortable with. The frats and sororities are very minor but great (def. helps with the social scene if that floats your boat). Any other questions on this???

How friendly did you find the campus when you first came?
People-wise it was hard at first to look past the "preppy, snotty" crowd
(people who's fathers can afford 250,000 for a degree) that refuses to
talk to people...but, soon enough, you find incredibly friendly people that
are very willing to make friends. The campus is very diverse, so you won't
be alone for long. The UPD is pretty friendly too. The only people that were
down right rude were the people serving bugers at wendy's, lol.

How is safety around the campus? Ever felt scared around campus?
Our "thing" to do the first two months of school was 3am monument
walks....a group of teenages walking from campus to the reflecting pool
to stare at the washington monument from the steps of the lincoln: in
other words, we felt pretty safe. There are blue lights u can push, UPD officers, etcc.Plus, no one is around in DC (people commute) so it's just
college students. i never really felt scared at all...but it's still better (if ur coming home from the library at 3am) to have a friend or not be drunk.

Please let me know if there is anything else you're curious about.
thanks

I was just wondering in general about the campus dining situation. Do you like the Colonial Cash idea? If you want lunch/dinner, where do you typically go? And what's the deal with the J Street Cafe?

How are academics at Elliot? How challengin are classes?
Are there a lot of intl students? How do they mix with the others?

Also, how is easy is access to alcohol when you are 18? what are underage nightlife opportunities?

Hey, I'm a GW freshman too who hasnt been on this board in forever and a half. I wandered in today and I thought I'd throw in my two cents.

I actually live in Potomac and I know that we don't find it boring at all - it's not Thurston but that's actually a good thing sometimes. My friends and I (who almost exclusively live at Potomac) have a great time but aren't constantly bombarded by alcohol and screaming girls. I think that you can adjust to pretty much anything, meaning it doesn't really matter where you live, because you'll probably end up loving it for its own charms. On that note, Mt. Vernon is not nearly as bad as it's made out to be. Everyone I've talked to there loves it - you end up with really close friends and the MV staff fawns over you to make sure you're having a good time. I actually haven't spent as much time there as I would like - the campus is absolutely beautiful.

As well, I always kind of feel that the snobby, stuck-up aspect of GW is far overstated. Most students are generally nice, friendly people and the ones that aren't are easy to ignore.

Colonial Cash is, for the most part, great, as long as you get out of the Marvin Center for dinner once in a while. There are lots of other options. ANd being able to shop at CVS on your card is a god-send. We've even recently used to buy ridiculous amounts of Christmas decorations! J-Street Cafe is pretty good, a little expensive but they have a meal plan you can get on your G-World and people seem to like it.

Hope that helps!

HeartGW, was Potomac your first choice - how are the rooms in there? I got in ED, so if I have an option - I don't think Thurston is for me.

How is Fulbright Hall? Any social scene there? I'm quite liking it at the moment (close to the library, surounded by GW buildings, not too big, not too small - well, yes, a little bit too small, but hey).

what would a typical friday/saturday night out be like in the first few weeks of freshman year, and then how does that change as the year goes on? (obiously this varies greatly from person to person) and what is the underage drinking situation in the dorms and in bars/clubs?

yea id like to know about the first few weeks as a freshmen as well it would be interesting to hear about peoples adjustments.

"I was just wondering in general about the campus dining situation. Do you like the Colonial Cash idea? If you want lunch/dinner, where do you typically go? And what's the deal with the J Street Cafe?"
Well, the Gworld dining method is pretty nice...although u don't notice how much you're spending and can quickly run out by the end of the year (1,700 is a lot for food, even in expensive places or ordering in, but if u buy books on it it might not last). Food is pretty great at the Marvin center...they have pizza, wendy's, a mini-grocery store, etc...I like Ames on Mount Vernon for luch...it's more "college-y" and has great food. The J street has buffets and is decent if ur especially hungry.....if u want u can sign up for a plan (700 i think) and have regular meals there. Trust me though, there is a lot of ordering in going on tho, so i wouldn't make the commitment.

"How are academics at Elliot? How challengin are classes?"
The classes are pretty hard, compared to other schools....the classes
are very very interesting tho..and u have a lot of leeway with ur schedule
the first few semesters because of the variety of classes.

"Are there a lot of intl students? How do they mix with the others?"
Yes, there are a few...I really can't say much about this one tho

"Also, how is easy is access to alcohol when you are 18? what are underage nightlife opportunities?"
Oh boy...it's almost never boring here...the liquor stores would be out
of business here if they didnt sell alcohol to minors, just to let u know.

Any other questions?????????????

Sorry, but I have quite a few questions, as GWU students are rarely on this site.

What is the courseload like?

Have you ever interned or do you know someone that has? Are there many opportunities available?

What would be the optimal housing for a student, whom is academically focused, but also enjoys the occasional party?

What are the student organizations like?

Typically, what would a student do on the weekends?

Thanks.

I am a freshman in the Elliot School and since I can't work on my final paper anymore for fear that my head will explode I thought I might as well visit this site again.

"What is the courseload like?" - I personally do not think that its too bad but it really depends on what classes you are taking. I am taking a lot of general requirements but I am not taking UW20 (freshman writing) or IAFF05 (Intro to International Affairs) and both of those are traditionally time intensive. It seems a lot like high school in that the amount of work you have depends on the amount of assigned work that you actually do.

Internships- One of my roommates is also a freshman and he is interning for his congressman this semester. I know plenty of people interning and it seems like there are plenty of opportunities but you have to be ready to do a ot of ***** work at first at most internships.

Housing- I would say go for Thurston, I am in the Honors Program which offers Honors housing in Potomac but Thurston is an amzing experience. You will meet more people than you know what to do with and will always have a chance to party. As far as academic, it is very easy to slip away and study somewhere else if your room is too loud. I am writing this from the basement of Thurston which has wireless internet and is a very quiet place to study.

Student Orgs- Way too many for me to cover. I am on the crew team so I haven't had too much time to do student orgs. Greek life is small and there is no pressure to do it and because of that rush and pledge is fairly relaxed. I just pledged a fraternity this fall and am really enjoying it.

Weekends- It really depends on what you want to do. Clubs are fairly popular as is drinking in your room. The UPD in Thurston is very relaxed and drinking is very common. Most weekends a fraternity or sorority will have a party. Fakes are not necessary but highly recommended, you can easliy buy without a fake but drinking at a bar/restaurant/club is hard to do without a fake.

Hope that helps.

Have you ever studied in your room at Thurston? Or does the noise penetrate to your dorm room and you've had to move away every single time?

I don't want to have to move out of MY dorm room to study every single time, and Thurston has such a reputation that even the official website itself said that it has "a lot of living" (there's an euphemism if I ever saw one).

But due to the lottery system, you can't really decide which dorm room you'll be placed in first, correct?

^But I guess I shouldn't complain about Thurston, because Mitchell is singles and floor baths, and HOVA is now for grad students?
