@college582 thanks for the quick answer. Do most students that try for the fellows scholarship get asked to apply?? My daughter is currently in her district competition for voice/chorus and if she makes regionals, the competition falls on the same weekend as the interviews. It’s a catch 22 because she’s come so far and she could go on to make states. She really was impressed with Elon but with no other money, we are not sure what will happen. (ACT 27, GPA 4.35 W, many EC’s, leadership activities and service, 3 AP’s).
@pago18 check out this link: https://www.elon.edu/E/admissions/undergraduate/first-year-class-profile.html
Scroll down to the bottom. Fellows stats are very high and programs are very competitive. I hope I’m not being too much of a downer, just trying to be realistic. My DD will not be applying for fellows as she doesn’t have the stats.
@pago18 last year my daughter did not get any money initially, but around April I guess they got some rejections and then gave my daughter one of the scholarships after she said that Elon was still on her “list” . She got accepted to her dream first choice (Elon was 2nd choice), with Merit, she ended up turning it down, but it was nice that they offered the presidental scholarship later in the game. So be patient.
Did your daughter’s acceptance letter encourage her to apply for the fellows program? We were told that they would do skype interview if you are unable to attend the fellows weekend, but that info came from our admission counselor, so I hope it’s correct. We too have a conflict that weekend, but my daughter is planning to apply.
@pago18 yes, almost all current fellows had been asked to apply. but that does not mean you have no chance if you were not asked. but I would disagree with @college582 you do not need to have the exact stats to be a fellow. I did not have the stats and was given the choice of two different fellows programs. I was 50 points below the SAT score but still nailed my interview, seminar essay, and mingled very well at the fellows receptions and was given two offers
@college582 that is interesting! Thanks!!!
@sdl0625 awesome! Thank you for the words of encouragement! Although I would be sad for her to go all the way to NC, I did love Elon too and wished I was applying haha.
@hjmlmiller no it didn’t encourage her to apply but aside from her ACT not being super high (27), she does have the GPA needed and she has a lot of EC’s and leadership activities… She is just unsure what the fellows program entails so I’m encouraging her to ask questions. We do have a friend whose daughter is currently a leadership fellow.
I think there are 6 different fellows programs so even if she may not qualify as an honors fellow there may be other options that would be a good fit. There’s a lot of info on the website and hey, you can’t get in if you don’t apply… good luck!
Does anyone have an idea as to how long the Fellows essay should be?
@shorts18 I have this question too!! Any anyone know? I did my best to look online and saw nothing, I was just going to assume a typical 500ish words/a pageish length?
My daughter is shooting for 500 words. She too has a 27 ACT and was invited to apply to the Fellows program and Leadership program. Of course, the emails went to my work email and we’ve been off since last week, so she has until the 10th to get the essays done. She is NOT the fastest writer!
Can someone explain what fellows weekend actually is? If you go to it, does that mean you are committed to the school? I applied for the honors and the college fellows but I’m not sure that Elon is my top choice.
Attending Fellows weekend is not a commitment. Fellows weekend is a chance for Elon to show off the faculty and school to talented students. It also includes components that are used in determining who gets in - an interview, attending a seminar and writing a paper and such.
For those who can’t attend Fellows weekend alternate arrangements are possible to ensure everyone has the chance to compete for positions, but of course it’s best if you can be there in person.
You can still decline the acceptance even if you attend Fellows weekend and even if you are admitted to a Fellows program.
Just submitted my 2 application to the College Fellows and Leadership Fellows a whopping 2 minutes before midnight… I have never experienced so much stress in my entire life. Also if anyone’s wondering my essays ended up being between 700-800 words. I figured since there’s no limit I might as well give them all I got
I totally missed the deadline because they didn’t tell me when it was until two days before it was due and I’m actually a little nervous. My letter said nothing about scholarships whatsoever. Are the Fellows/Odessey programs the only ways to get scholarships there? Because if so, I’m definitely not going there.
@ag2000 I am not 100% sure but I from what I have seen scholarships are sent with admissions letters and the other options are the fellowships/odyssey programs. Elon has a whole booklet on Financial Aid which they sent my daughter a while back. Might be best if you contact admissions for more information.
The college site itself talks about the Fellows and Odyssey Programs. My daughter’s invite came on Jan 6 saying that they thought she would be a good candidate to try for the business fellows. She quickly had to work on it for Jan 10 deadline because she wasn’t sure if she was going to or not. She did get it in on January 9th and tried her best. I do think they have scholarships besides those but I asked admissions and they said they have cutoffs for ACT/SAT’s for those.
