Elon University Question

I want to first thank all of the wonderful people who are so helpful on this thread. I am a junior trying to research schools, and this is the most helpful site I have found!!! Someone told me that Elon was full of very wealthy, conservative, religious types. I have no problem with that, I’m just curious if this is true…Thanks for your imput!

not what I hear. Do some more research

My D auditioned at Elon in the fall and we found the students very friendly, varied and helpful. She fell in love with the school, but unfortunately was not accepted into the MT program. The school seems to have HUGE endowments which enables them to offer programs/opportunities that may make it appear "wealthy". There are new facilities with amazing technology. We took the tour and don't even remeber seeing any kind of church so a religious leaning did not seem apparent.

Do your homework and come to your own conclusions. What works for someone else might not be right for you. Ericsmom on this site has a son at Elon and is EXTREMELY helpful- go back and read all the postings here especially hers. Even though she did not get into the MT program my D still loves the school and even recommended it to one of her closest friends.

thank you, i have researched the school but didn't find anything on that subject, and i can't afford to visit. i think i will apply and then if I'm accepted, I'll visit the school to make my decision...IF I'm accepted!!

Due to financial constraints we were unable to visit schools before auditioning. It has worked fine so far. I think the intense research before she picked her final list helped to make sure that she chose wisely. Auditon season is not over yet though, and I expect that between now and the end she will audition at a school that does not "click" with her. Many people visit the school later if they get accepted at an off-site audition- you are on the right track. Keep doing that background work!!!

My son is currently an MT freshman and he LOVES it there. When we first began researching schools, it was not his first choice. The first time we had ever been there was the day he auditioned and it immediately became the place he wanted to go to school. The campus is beautiful, the people are very nice and as one student said to us "They really spoil us here."

Yes, there are some students there from pretty wealthy backgrounds, but we are certainly not one of those, and I think that is true for more students than you might think. As far as being conservative, politically my son said the school leaned Obama. I suppose that's because, even though the school is in the South, which most people think is quite conservative, there are students from all over at Elon.

Religious I don't know so much about. We are Protestant, and I know of one student in the freshman class who is Catholic and a few that are Jewish.

I'd say go ahead and apply EA and schedule an audition. If you get an academic rejection, you can always cancel. The one thing I learned from this process last year is that schools are not always what they seem on paper. My son HATED the location of his original first-choice school, and fell in love with Elon. I really think you have to visit the location to see if it is a good fit for you.

Elon has a diverse and friendly group. Yes, some are wealthy - that will be true of every private school in the universe - but, as private schools go, Elon is on the more affordable side. No, Elon is not specifically "conservative" in its religious bent - again, it is diverse - and all are welcome. If you are interested in Elon - or any other program - please make every effort to visit the school, meet the actual faculty and student body - and make your own, informed, decision!

My child is a sophomore MT major at Elon. It IS expensive. It IS wonderful and my child loves it, but bear in mind that the cost of the education for the most part is being covered by loans, to the tune of approximately $15,000 per year. You need someone to be realistic with you. We did not have the money to audition at many schools (in fact, we found out that we knew very little about all this!) and auditioned at only 3, Elon was the only one that required a plane flight.

I would say the majority of students that my child has encountered are not as financially strapped as we are. Conservative? You won't find that in MT, but there were plenty of students at the Palin rally. I would say that it's a healthy mix.

My attitude as a parent was if this is the place my child wanted to go, I was going to find a way to do it. And I have 3 children in college! Follow your heart and your dream.

mtfamily - thanks so much for your nice comments about me, and I'm very happy to help anyone with questions! The best way to reach me with questions is to send me an e-mail from the drop-down menu on my screen name. I have a hard time getting to CC very often these days, as I'm in graduate school myself and continue to work full time.

I can assure you that many of the Elon families are like us, not wealthy and not religiously conservative. You probably find a mix of all types, but I believe that the student population in the MT program leans toward the liberal side. They all went to the Palin rally because it was a big deal on campus, but I think you would find that the majority of them were Obama fans.

I agree with the above, that Elon is a very warm and welcoming environment. I also believe that different political views and different religions would all fit in at that school. It's one of those places that feels like home right away. You wouldn't need to worry so much about these matters - just go visit and see for yourself!

thanks for all your help! i'm trying to save money to visit, hopefully soon!!

just got back from Elon. beautiful campus, it looks like the photos on line. normal campus tour guide told us she is not religious and has not felt the campus is, although it was founded by the United Church of Christ, and if the previous poster did not see a church, they had their eyes closed. They changed their mascot back in the day from the fighting christian to the pheonix. students do dress nicely.

Check out Transforming a College by George Keller, available at www.amazon.com. Elon today is VERY different from 30 years ago. Talks about how they transformed the college (including the mascot change). Very interesting.

greetings!
my son is auditioning at elon for mt...question: on the website it says to check in at 9a. he received an email that advised him, auditions run until 9pm...does that seem right?
please let me know how your day went.
thanks!

The reason they tell you 9pm is because those who applied later get later time slots. It's merely stating the time the auditions could go to. When I auditioned I was done and able to leave at 5.

i auditioned on friday and i heard one person say his individual audition time was a 8pm. if that helps

Last week the auditions did go past 9 PM. The day is stretched out. We took advantage of the normal campus info session and tour in between MT audition sections. D loved the dance, said it was hard but good. Not so sure late apps get late time slots, as we were in the later group but applied and got audition slot pretty early in the game. Maybe we picked a popular date. You will receive email with times of info session, class audit, dance auditions, vocal audition. I emailed to double check I was not reading it wrong. It started at 10:30 AM and was scheduled until 8:10 PM, and we were not last. BUT, they are the only school we went to who gave you time with the accompanist prior to the vocal audition. A very nice touch, I might add. I thought maybe we were put in a later group as we were from far away and that allowed us to sleep in, and adjust to time
change. It was a nice bonus.

are the acting/vocal auditions separate?

claydavisdbc - acting and vocal auditions are done at the same time (but separate from the dance call :D).

Best of luck Clay...2 years ago S was in your shoes. Elon is a great school and was his second choice. very good program. just relax and let the real you show through.
