We've seen that Elon's reputation is growing quickly, but still have some concerns that if/when our daughter moves back to Pennsylvania, or Ohio, Elon would be less appreciated than more local schools, especially in the field of teaching.

I suppose this is often true (local schools = local contacts), but I was looking for CC experiences with Elon graduates moving back North, and the reception they received. Is Elon perceived by many as a southern regional college, lacking the "national reputation" that many LACs are trying to develop? Are alumni networks still small outside the south, given that Elon's reputation has just recently been on the rise?

I can’t speak to PA and OH specifically, but we live in MD and name recognition is strong. My son frequently wears an Elon shirt when he is home and out with his friends and he is constantly stopped by someone who wants to talk about Elon. He recently met an Elon graduate who is an investor in a restaurant chain - which might have been a job lead if he had been looking. I don’t think it could compare to the local reputation or alumni network of an in-state college, but Elon is growing in the right direction.

Son is not graduated yet so can not comment on that specifically either. But funny thing is husband wore a Elon shirt on our vacation flying from NJ to Maui. All along the way in three airports people came up to him and wanted to talk about Elon. Either graduated from there or new people who went there.

I think you will find with Elon’s rankings across the board comes national recognition. So many alumni are from the northeast and there is a real sense of networking. Also remember there is a very strong parent presence that works with the career center to offer internships and jobs.

Elon’s move to part of the Colonial Sports association will only increase Elon’s recognition in the northeast.

If someone interviews your child that has yet to hear of Elon, it gives her an additional chance to describe her experience and shine.

My daughter is a rising senior. She has friends who majored in business who are working in Boston. She doesn’t know any recent education grads though, so I can’t speak directly to how they are received in the Northeast.

However the latest enrollment figures for the Class of 2017 show that the percentage of kids from the mid-Atlantic and Northeast states continues to rise - 42% of the incoming freshman class is from Mass, NY, NJ, PA, and MD. Alumni networks in those areas should be growing rapidly. Most of the students my daughter knows are from MA, CT, NJ, PA and northern VA.

I live in Maryland, too (Baltimore, in fact) and find that many people have heard of Elon, though there definitely are some people for whom the name draws a complete blank. On the other hand, I have with increasing frequency run into people who have not only heard of it, but have worked with students from Elon as interns and have wholeheartedly commented on what engaged, bright kids they were.
