^ makes sense to me.

Yes. UCB's prospective students, not admitted students. If Cal only sent this email to people who have been admitted, then people who did not receive this email would infer that they have been rejected. If so, Cal would just come out officially with the decisions already.

To relieve the anxiety of those who didn't get the "doesn't mean a thing" email, here is some humor. Relax guys, it isn't over till next weekend. Laugh it out, watch some TV, play a video game, whatever... And Good luck to all !!

Here is the scene in the war room at UCB. Goes something like this:
A: Geez, UCLA announced a week early, what do we do?
B: We are not done counting the hanging chads, how can we announce the results?
C: Turn on that table lamp, I need to check this punched card - is it a hanging chad or a broken chad?
A: Quiet, Mr. C. This is more serious! Let us ask the Supreme Court what to do.
B: I called the justices and they voted to send out a teaser to the public...
A: What should we say?
C: Ignore UCD, UCI, UCSD, UCSB, UCLA, wait for another week...
A: Who do we send it to?
B: Everyone..
A: But what about those we are going to reject?
B: I am sure those who apply to UCB are smart enough to figure it's just a teaser - even our rejects are super smart!
A: I agree. On a sunny day like today, what do you think they (those who didn't get the email) will do?
Look at their extraordinary ECs, they will go out and play basketball..
C: Let us send it to some OOS too, so everyone figures it's a teaser...
A: And some internationals too..
B: And to all their parents too..
C: And to their counselors who supported them..
A: And just to confuse people, how about we don't go alphabetical...
B: Let's use that supercomputer in Lawrence Lab to generate totally random order...

Two days later....

A: Sorry, guys, I have been told our Berkeley servers are down sending too many spams and have been blocked by all ISPs. Guess, we have to mail those decisions by snail mail after all...
C: Those emails didn't affect UCB reputation, but this server being down is going to...
B: I am glad we set Apr 27th as the deadline, as we are still 4 days ahead of the IVies! Go Cal !!
A: Go Cal!!
C: Go Cal!!

^good point...

Guys... come on now. This is not the Da Vinci Code, there are no hidden codes or agendas.

I'm sure UCB is reading this thread and laughing like crazy. Gimmieaclu has a point, though

rr43, you just made my day. :D

Yeah, getting the e-mail was nice and all, and it's alright to have my hopes up about it (in the event that it is, in fact, some sort of likely letter), but at the same time I've heard so many rumors spilling through here in the past few days that it's almost laughable to think that Cal has any ulterior motive.

Like so many other people have said, you have to take what's said on these forums with a grain of salt. While a lot of it may be true, even more of it is speculation.

The only thing that's solid is that decisions come out on the 27th.

It's not so far away. :)

I can guarantee people who have received it aren't automatically in. I got it, OOS, 3.45W GPA and 2040. No real extra-curriculars, Hispanic/Latino, Both sisters went there and graduated valedictorian but that's besides the point.

^cxc08,

Hispanic/Latino and BOTH sisters graduated "valedictorian" . . . and you think that's irrelevant? Think again.

Did everybody get the e-mail or not?

rr43 LOLOL!!!!!btw lextalionis i like your logic and i got the email too and i would really like to know if its any hint @ admission...(4.24 wUC, 4.76 uncapped weightedUC, 3.98 uwUC, 2080 SAT 30 ACT, passioante ec's great esssays according to eng teacher and librarian)

also im in-state

hmm... I received the email but when I log into myBerkeleyApplication, the message isn't there. anyone else like this?

I do believe the email doesn't mean anything special though

I didn't get the email. When I log in, this is what I see:

"Your application has been received and is In Review
Decisions will be available the evening of 3/27/2008"

I applied to 4 others, and have been accepted at all of them (UCD, UCSB, UCI, UCSD) and I'm expecting to get in at Berkeley as well...(not trying to brag, I swear, I'm just going off of their admissions statistics).

You don't see it when you log in; rather, it is on the admissions page with a link entitled "Special Letter to 2008 Applicants." Aqui:
http://students.berkeley.edu/admissions/general.asp?id=3677

this is kinda ridiculous...

trust me. everyone gets this -_-

even I got it this morning.. and i totally fail. (3.67UW 2130 SAT) i have no chance in berkeley compared to the usual people who gets in from my school and i can careless 'cause i really dont wanna go (dont flame me.. just everyone frm my school is there.. i dont want another 4 years of highschool)

stop freaking out. 5 more days and it ALL will be over. :]

golden: Just out of curiosity, have you looked at the UCLA admitted thread for this past week? There were many, many kids on there with 2300s who were rejected! Stats mean nothing, when it comes down to it. It's all about whether you've got everything they want...which extends well beyond SATs and GPA. And, with all due respect, getting admitted to the schools you mentioned is a far, far cry from UCB admissions. Best of luck though, I wish you the best!

lex: You are way, WAY over-analyzing. Everyone gets the email, just not all at once. Want to challenge me? Fine, call admissions, just like I did. Odds are, they'll tell you something along the line of

this email is sent to all applicants to inform them of the decision release date. It is NOT an offer of admission, a so-called "likely letter", or anything along those lines. All applicants receive one, and it is also posted on our admissions site. Please do not take it for anything more than a pleasant reminder.

~From an email I received, questioning them about our question.

Please...do us all a favor and stay off CC, stay off your kid's account, and stay away from your college admissions bubble for the next few days.

You're like a bumble bee: stunning, looming, annoying and inefficient, all in one gregarious package.

Hey,
If anybody gets into Berkeley and got rejected from UCLA, want to trade if I get rejected from Berkeley, I got into UCLA.
:)

learnmestuff.. but I didn't get one and I am an applicant, so, it must mean something ..

Maybe they meant to send them out to everybody but somehow messed up.

Or they could've sent out different versions of the email. I also received the "we're worth the wait!" email, but one of my good friends who also applied received the same email, but without the whole "we're worth the wait!" part, which was interesting.
