Email to send admissions.

I heard that it would show my commitment to email admission officers and make some contact.
I really want to get to this school.
Will they see my effort for doing such?
If so, What can be some appropriate questions I can ask?
Can I ask, if this particular major makes it more competitive for some students?

Only if the school considers demonstrated interest, and even then they might not be the ones with a voice in admissions. Try to visit campus or attend a school-related event in your area.

A couple of comments:

– Only certain schools care about demonstrated interest. Google the common data set of each school you plan to apply to and look at section C to see if demonstrated interest is a factor.

–There are many other ways to show demonstrated interest such as visiting the school, getting on the school email list, going to a presentation if an admissions rep. is in your area etc.

–Please recognize that admissions coffers are busy. Really busy. You won’t impress anyone by sending an email just for the sake of sending an email. If you do send an email be sure it is for a thoughtful question that cannot be answered by looking at the school website.

– I don’t think I would ask the question you suggested – it seems to me you should just apply to the major you want to study.

Okay, so I visited NYU this summer with an official tour. Will they know that I have visited their school? do they keep a record of names of people who visited?

If you signed in at admissions they should know you have been there. And at some schools you can find a way to work in that you visited the school into a supplemental essay.
