Emailing faculty..too early?

Hello all,

I'm a rising senior (whoaa, no really??? on the college admissions board? no waaay...)...ahem, pardon my uncontrollable outbursts of sarcasm. AHEM. I'm interested mainly in the cognitive sciences/neurosciences, but with an avid love for music as well. I am actually considering a BA/BM track.

Here's my question, though: is it too early to start emailing faculty and some of my colleges and ask questions and such? Should I wait for the actual admissions season to start (i.e. October-ish) or even for after admit-reject season (i.e. April-ish)?

Thanks! I really appreciate your input.
mihan :D

You can try asking now. If you do ask, make sure the questions are actually worth asking. In other words, don’t just e-mail for the sake of e-mailing them. They might be very busy.

It really depends on what you’re emailing them for. If it’s just fluff stuff, I suggest against it.

You can start right now. Heck, I e-mailed a college professor at end of May and she was very helpful! Just be extra polite, you’ll get a much more positive answer and it will make you seem mature (not that you aren’t :)

Also, as the others said, don’t ask them questions to which you could find the answers in any prints. Do your research before and it’ll all go well  Good luck!

Or you could always ask here on CC. There are many college reps here as well as current students and alumni.

This early in the process you should make sure you only contact those faculty who have responsibility for programs you are interesed in. Faculty who are available will likely be busy getting ready for fall. And make sure you are asking good questions. Ask youself, why am I contacting this particular faculty member. What does he or she know, that I need to know that cannot be gotten from other information sources at the school.
