So I took a tour of a college a couple months ago, and I met with the head of the department of the major I intend on majoring in. It’s somewhat competitive. He said he likes hearing from students, getting updates and such. I’m an incoming senior getting ready to apply to colleges- I want to email him, but I don’t know what to say! I want to ask a question but I can’t think of one I don’t already know the answer to/can find easily online. What should I write in my email?
You can thank him for spending time with you, for starters. Other than that, if you don’t have a question that can’t easily be answered elsewhere, don’t force yourself to come up with one. Be respectful of his time.
You could ask “What differentiates his department from those of <college’s> peers?”</college’s>
or look on the dept website and see what sort of research/activities are going on…
“I saw on the dept website about the Solar Racer program…what kind of classes are best to take to prepare for that and how does one get involved?”
