emails from colleges about your essays/applications

If you get an email from a college, from the person in admissions who has read your application, that talks about how they liked your essay or such things, does that mean you stand a good chance of getting in? It seems to me that it must be a good sign, since they probably wouldn't go to the effort if you were an automatic reject. But HOW good a sign? Does it mean that you're basically in (so sort of like a likely letter), or does it merely signify that you've got a decent chance?

Definitely a pretty darn good sign! :)

haha. i'm rather curious what your essay was about. care to share?
