Emails from WashU professors? Is it just more marketing?

I know WashU is notorious for their marketing blitz but I'm wondering if this includes emails from department heads or directors of certain degree programs? Is my DD reading too much into the fact that she has received some? And, if they are asking for her to come talk to them, is that a good sign?

definitely not a bad sign… i don’t think i’ve heard people talk about being contact by professors before really… And I’m sure department heads don’t send individualized emails to everyone. Anybody had experience with this?

Sometimes professors recruit specific students for specialized programs

I actually recently got one from the Dean of The School of Engineering & Applied Science. I’m also wondering if this is just for marketing as well, so I’ll bump this up to see if anyone has any opinions on it. :)

My son got one of those emails just a few weeks before he went to their DW. Wrote back to the guy (“sounds interesting…thanks for sharing…and I’ll be there for DW, maybe I can say hello”) The professor responded with “great!” and sent the correspondance to the admissions office. They set up an interview/meeting.

Turns out, my son wasn’t terribly interested in that particular topic, but he was introduced to some new, different, and interesting things he wouldn’t have known if this exchange hadn’t happened. As someone on the sidelines, I was impressed the school pursued this. I was impressed w/ this professor too for taking the time to meet someone in these circumstances.

Once again: kudos to WashU.

It’s called “networking”, and is a very useful tool to have and utilize in life, whether you’re looking for a job, or looking for a doctor.

We went ahead and set up meetings with the director of the program that contacted my daughter when she takes her official visit there. I’m such a skeptic because I know they waitlist and turn so many applicants down, but I will say, I’ve been impressed by their interest in my daughter and willingness to have her talk to as many people as possible during her visit.

I got one from the dean…is this what you guys are getting also?
