We have admits to both places for aerospace engineering (along with UIUC, Purdue, U of C/boulder, Missouri S&T, Illinois tech). Embry-Riddle and Cal Poly seem to be the top contenders right now. Any thoughtsabout the programs? Class sizes? Are any schools impacted?
@cztoca
Both programs are very good and reputable. Bottom line: Your post-graduation opportunities will not be limited with either one. Class sizes are generally smaller at Riddle – anywhere from 10-20 students for engineering classes, and 15-30 for general ed classes. At Cal Poly, you’re looking at more like 20-50 for engineering classes, and 30-100+ for general ed classes. Aerospace Engineering at Cal Poly is an impacted major, but that appears to have more of an effect on admission into the program, and less on graduation rates (Source: Cal Poly Institutional Research website).
My honest opinion is that both schools are great. I would focus more on personal fit at this point… have you visited both campuses? Do you intend to? Having visited both myself, they each have their own unique characteristics, pros, and cons. CP is a bit larger and has more of a California coastal vibe, while Embry-Riddle Prescott is smaller/more tight-knit has a high desert/mountain vibe. FWIW, I was accepted to both 10+ years ago, but ended up going to Embry-Riddle and loved it! Great school…
Best of luck with your decision!
Thank you so much for the reply. You provided some valuable insight. We have visited Cal Poly and loved it. We have plans to visit ERAU during spring break/open house, and are really looking forward to the tour/flight line etc.
