Hey everyone, I’d like to get a discussion going about this year’s Eminence. The requirements seem pretty steep, but it’s worth a shot. What are you guys doing for your videos and essays? What is the selection committee looking for?
Hi all, my D finished her app last night. I believe they are due this week?
Her video was 2 minutes with basic info about her and what she’d do for a Spark Lesson.
Her info included sign language (she is not hard of hearing but loves it) and the fact that she wants to study Audiology She also included her passion for a non-profit she volunteers at (homeless food kitchen).
Her Spark lesson was on emphasizing and handling diversity during individual interactions. Sounds fancy but it was pretty basic. In other words, she wanted to explore how students manage diversity as they meet new people on campus?
D stats are probably outside looking in, but you don’t know until you try!
Out of State, 3.97 (unweighted), 32 ACT, 6 AP Classes/1 concurrent, #24/524 (5%), many school extra-curricular including office positions, Varsity athlete (soccer).
That sounds really cool, thanks for sharing! What have other people doing for their stuff? (it’s okay if you want to wait until after the deadline to answer, haha). @Frogs12345 did your D do a slides video or just herself talking in front of a background?
Also, sorry to keep editing my post, but do you guys know when we’ll be notified if we’re finalists or not? Do we get an email regardless, or do we only know if we’re finalists?
Our DD just submitted last night…
ACT 35 raw/ 36 ss
NMSF, 4.3 etc
Spark topic was the people of Kurdistan? No clue what to expect on this? We don’t know a lot about the program… sounds like a super sharp bunch of kids though! I wonder how many apply and how many are interviewed, etc?
“The university is providing 95 Eminence scholarships this year. Since 2012, there have been 153 Eminence Fellows.” from https://innovativefunding.osu.edu/
I applied! I talked about promoting literacy in children from low-income areas. One of my majors is going to be English Education, so literacy is definitely something I’m passionate about lol. Just found out Friday that I’ve been admitted to OSU, hopefully I make it into Eminence as well!
@BuckeyeMWDSG Unfortunately, I think the 95 Eminence Fellows number is the sum of current fellows across all four years, not the number they are going to award this year. I imagine they will award 20 - 25 again this year. Good luck to all!
My daughter applied. Her video included stuff about who she is outside of her academics. She is fluent in Chinese, an actress with many leading roles, works as a clown, she is a multiple brain tumor survivor and advocate. Her spark session was to explore the lack of federal funding for research into children’s brain tumors as compared to other cancer. Her grades and test scores are in the range so we are praying she has a shot. Good luck to everyone!
@1happypappy My son is also a brain tumor survivor and an OSU applicant. He recently finished treatment in July. He did not apply for scholarships…not that they aren’t needed. Best of luck to your daughter! ?
@tweetie1 I hope he is doing ok! One resource I would reccommend is The Children’s Brain Tumor Foundation www.CBTF.org they are great. Has he been accepted yet?
He should get in with those stats. My daughter was accepted in the first wave. Considering all they have been through, I am amazed at how high the stats are…my daughter has 34 ACT and a high GPA as well. She has taken 15 AP classes! We visited OSU over the summer and she loves the school. We are in New York and cannot afford out of state tuition so we are hopeful she gets a scholarship.
@1happypappy Wow! 15 AP classes!!! I think with those scores and her essay, she’s going to get some money! My son has taken 4, I think, along with a few dual enrollment. Since he was diagnosed May of 2017 and finished treatment July of 2018, his junior year he only took 3 classes. And his senior year he has been limited, as well. He still has 2 APs and one dual enrollment)…and physics. He is still having random effects from the chemo and once or twice a week he is pretty wiped out (he has now been asleep 4 hours since school let out today). We did the campus visit at OSU this summer but we didn’t do the walking tour. It was a really hot day and Andrew was weak from having just finished a chemo. I want to plan another campus visit soon.
Crossing my fingers for scholarships for your daughter!
