Emory Freshmen Visit

I am planing to apply to Emory RD. If I am accepted, is there campus preview weekend? Because I am applying to both campus and if i am accepted to both, i would like to have a campus preview weekend like many other universities have.

@boombooom123: Much like elsewhere there are admitted student openhouses and the like. And usually it is during the WEEK so that you can visit classes (please do this! College does have an academic component and a social component. Most of these visitation events will leave much more of an impression of the social life and opps than anything else. Be sure to check out the best of the academics at the schools you visit) and things of that nature. According to the admissions website, the options to register from them are within the admitted students portal.

My memory is that Emory runs three “Admitted Students Days” in April. They are extremely well-run. Very early in the day they separate the kids from their parents. It gives the kids a chance to hang with other kids who may very well turn out to be their classmates, and allows the parents to ask the questions they want to ask without risk of embarrassing their kids.

My son, who’s a junior, was undecided prior to going the the Admitted Students Day. By the end of the day he told me he was going to Emory, and that he’d never been so sure of a decision in his life. The biggest factor was the quality and nature of the other kids who’d been admitted. And it turned out to be a great ‘fit’ for him.

@AsleepAtTheWheel Thanks for your reply. Where can I find information on the admitted student days? Also, I was interested in Oxford College of Emory, do they run a similar program?

@bernie12 Thanks, is there a similar option for oxford college? as oxford college is very small + small entering class, do they also hold such an event?

@boomboom123 In the past, Oxford College had its own event for admitted students. If you get admitted, that information will be part of your acceptance packet.

@BiffBrown Okay, thanks. Is it like a day event or a live on campus event? Are you a current student at Oxford?

@boomboom123 I didn’t attend the event myself and, as a result, I don’t recall whether there was an overnight component or not. I was pretty busy at the time.

All those details will be included in your packet along with contact information of current students who will be happy to answer your questions by phone or email.

@boomboom123 It’s great that you’re so enthusiastic.

@BiffBrown My daughter is a current freshman at Oxford. Oxford offers a full day-long revisit program on the Oxford campus, and my daughter met a few of her current friends during her revisit. They also separate students from parents for at least half the day. Good luck! It’s a wonderful program.

@chemmchimney Thanks, so it is not residential? Just a one day program ? Also, do you still remember the date last year?

@boomboom123 I’m not sure if there is a chance to spend the night with a student or not. We were revisiting multiple schools so my daughter would not have been able to do that. Dates are in the acceptance packet.

I’m sure some (?many) will differ, but I don’t really know whether an overnight visit in this context provides any meaningful help in terms of decision-making. Those overnights are heavily influenced by one’s host, who may or may not be representative of the kids at the school. You may have a great overnight or a lousy one, but it might not reflect on whether the school is a good fit.

@AsleepAtTheWheel : The Essence (for URMs and first gen. students) Program helps. I can say that my host wasn’t very good at all but, but events were arranged so that you can meet others easily and have like a day or two to wonder off on your own and visit courses and the like. It is kind of a fuller experience because your day doesn’t remain as structured as it would for an open house.
