Emory Materialistic?

So apparently Emory has a reputation of being extremely materialistic? I've never heard of this until now...I heard that a lot of rich snobby people come here too..true?

god i hope not

Not my experience in my 6 or 7 visits there. I actually had the oppsosite reaction when I first visited with my daughter last spring. I can certainly say the faculty is not pretentious at all. She has had much more contact with her professors than I would have thought possible for a freshman.

Keep in my though that any school (Ivies, prestigious privates, LACs) that costs as much as Emory is going to have some people who must pay full freight -- these people must have substantial resources -- it does not mean that they are all materialistic. I think if you visit, you will immediately know if your worry will be a concern for you.

I agree with collegex5. Certainly, plenty of students have money. There are also a sign number of students on FA. Frankly that is the case at most private institutions. My D's spending money is what she earns the summer before and she has been fine. Are there times she has wished she had more disposable cash - sure but that has nothing to do with Emory. Her friends and profs are wonderful. Be careful about stereotypes, decide for yourself. With all of these schools, your education is what you make of it.

I would concur in Movinmom's assessment.

lots of rich kids, lots of BMWs, Mercedes, Land Rovers, and other exotic cars one kid had a Lamborghini for a little while. A lot of people dress nicely. There are certain groups of rich snobby people probably a larger group than you would find at a state school. However, its not really a big deal.

every school has its ostentatious lot, emorys is not bigger than other private schools, but nor is emory devoid of jackasses who rearend their car into a professors, and have their parents bail them out and buy them a new car. There's some awesome, downtoearth professors who are not at all materialistic though.

Yes, there are a lot of JAPs at Emory.

l've never seen or heard of a materialistic professor. Some of the students may be materialistic, but as collegex5 said, some people do pay full fare and have loads left to spend after that.
