This is not meant to insult anyone at all. I'm just wondering what the typical Emory student is like. i've heard it's kinda a jappy northeasterner - and I don't like that b/c I'm already surrounded by kids like that in NY!! lol Anyway, is that true? whats the deal?

In my son's dorm suite last year--son is from central Ohio, well-travelled, cosmopolitan but not spoiled: one roommate from Detroit: one roommate from Orlando, Florida; and one roommate from New York. The girls in the next suite: one from Vermont, One from Houston, one from Denver and one from Boston. Several are Jewish but none would qualify as a jap; I'm sure that there are spoiled kids on any private school's campus, and lots on state school campuses as well.

Yes, there are a fair # of "stereotpical Jappy" and wealthy students at Emory. The NY sterotype is high for a southern school but is certainly not overwhelming and I doubt it is much more than 25%. I can also tolerate that since I currently live in that environment. You find your niche and friends whether at high school or college. Keep in mind that at these type of private schools, that the majority of students come from well to do families throughout the country. I read a stat that something like 65-70% of Northwestern students come from families earning over 250K.

I did notice at Emory a fair number of designer clothes and accessories. Doesn't bother me much. I am sure these students do more than chat about their Prada collection since many are quite intelligent and studious.

Obviously, you will generally find there to be more wealthy students at privates than at state universities. How many families can afford a private sticker price w/o making financial sacrifices even with some financial aid.

The "jappy" population has a presence on campus, but Emory is a very diverse campus as well. I'm from Atlanta and border on the hippie/environmentalist/indie stereotype. My roommate is from the Philippines.

Yes, the campus is full of rich kids, but the range of cultural and intellectual diversity is fantastic. Don't worry too much about NY Japs, the campus is so much more than just that!
