Yes, address below & still have the checklist. I thought checklist disappeared before decisions? Hmm.
IMO just because there is an increase in the number of applications to a specific school doesn’t mean that there is an increase in the number of students in the total application pool. This year, with COVID and SAT optional, many students are applying to more schools than normal, but in the end, prospective applicants can only go to one school. I don’t think we are going to see the decrease in acceptance rates that everyone is expecting across the board. Upper echelon schools will see a decrease, second tier schools will probably see a decrease, but any school lower than the most selective will probably need to accept more students, not less. If anything, I expect schools to increase the number of applicants admitted (even if just slightly) and increase the size of their waitlists and dig deeper into those lists if needed. I expect that schools outside of the most selective are expecting their yield rates to decrease this year and will adjust their acceptance rates up accordingly.
I really wish you said was true, but I am really nervous
While I think this comment is true, unfortunately, I believe Emory to be in that tier of schools where acceptance rates go down. I would expect greater waitlist activity this year because of the impact increased applications per student may have on yield (though I’m sure schools are trying their best to factor that into decisions).
Yes, that’s been documented. Only like a 1% increase in the number of unique applicants (for Common app anyway).
You are correct that some schools (the more selective ones) are enjoying an overload of apps so they can be pickier than ever (and possibly end up pulling from waitlists). Lower tier schools definitely are struggling because they rely more on tuition rather than giant donations and grants, and they also rely on housing revenue; when students decide to live off campus or stay at home those schools take a hit. But the one thing all of these situations have in common is an element of chaos and uncertainty. Yay for us to be in the middle of it!
I cannot agree any more about this.
You’re right but the problem in this case is that Emory is one of those upper echelon schools in the extremely selective tier that saw an increase in applications. I think they had a 20% increase in unique applications. This year about 34,000 applied and last year about 30,000 applied. Not to mention gap year kids who will be part of class of 2025. Emory admitted an equal number of people ED1 and ED2 as other years despite the gap years so we have a situation with fewer total number of seats and higher application numbers. Other elite colleges like UCLA, Johns Hopkins, MIT have all seen lowered acceptance rates. All the other UC schools saw them too. So I think we will definitely see a lower acceptance rate for Emory
To everyone worried about the emoryadmitted website: I was admitted last month and they had us set up a whole new account and I could only log onto the website through that account, so I really don’t think it’s an indicator of if you’re accepted or not Hope this helps!! Good luck to everyone tomorrow!
‘Unique applicants’ refers to common app. Only slight increase in the number of applicants, but huge increase in number of applications, so kids are applying to way more schools. It seems partially caused by the chaos but also contributes to the chaos.
I’d attribute it to TO. The kid with great grades and a 26 ACT would never apply to Emory but with test optional, why not ?
Of course. It’s really wreaked havoc on the process. And even traditionally strong applicants might be applying to more because of uncertainty, not being able to visit schools, etc.
good luck everyone tmrw!!
Agree, that is why we have dramatically increased numbers of applicants for almost all colleges.
What time is Emory coming out
