hey everyone- Ive heard that anywhere from 2000-4000 students apply for the emory scholars program. 3 quick questions: a) when exactly do we get called if we're semifinalists/finalists b) do they call us in january and tell us we've been accepted/deferred even if we're not semifinalists c) are all seminfinalists guaranteed some sort of scholarship? thanks a lot.

mcgruff88,

The administrators of the Emory Scholars Program state that there are usually around 2,000 nominated students who apply to ESP by the Nov. 1 deadline. Of this number, about 350 are notified as "semifinalists" in late January (by U.S. Postal Service). Of this 350, an undetermined number are then named "finalists" sometime in late February and are invited to Emory for a 4-day visit to allow students to get to know Emory better, and also to go through interviews, etc. Emory states that about 150 total scholarships are awarded, ranging from partial-tuition to full-ride awards.

To answer your questions, you do not get called -- notification occurs by U.S. Postal Service. If you are named a semifinalist, you are by and large admitted into Emory but not assured of a merit scholarship award. Those who are not named semifinalists are still considered for admission into Emory, although admission is not guaranteed for those not named semifinalists. Not all semifinalists are offered merit awards. Of those finalists who are offered merit scholarships, I have heard that approximately 60% accept the scholarships. Those who leave the offers on the table usually have chosen other options, such as Ivy League schools or merit awards from other colleges.

Check with the Emory Admissions Office, and they will be happy to answer your questions for you. Also, see the following link to get more info about ESP and a listing of different categories of scholarships offered:

Or what happens to that 40% of scholarship money that is turned down? Any "late" offers?
