What's next for Scholars semifinalists?

So, what do you have to do if you get accepted as a semi. The message says, ". . .group of 350 nominees. Seventy finalists will be chosen from this group and invited to campus for interviews March 26-March 29. Attendance for the full four days of Scholar Finalist Weekend is required of finalists who wish to remain in competition for a full tuition Emory scholarship. An additional group of approximately 100 semifinalists will be selected for the John Emory Scholarships of 2/3 tuition. All semifinalists will be notified of their status in the Emory Scholars program by late February."

Are they saying that they're going to have like another selections committee and pick the finalists and other scholarship recipients out of the semifinalists?
If this is true, semifinalists are basically people who got accepted and just advanced notice that they're still in the running?

I'm confused. =S

I just posted a similar thread, but there are also an unknown amount of Liberal Arts Scholarships started last year given out to a bunch of semis too. Not just the john emory and finalist scholarships.

I'm pretty sure at the info session I went to they said that all semifinalists that do not advance receive Liberal Arts Scholarships...

First of all, congratulations to all ESP Semifinalists. I'm sure you are all deserving.

I've posted on this before, but as of last year's ESP applicants, all Semifinalists who are not named Finalists were offered a "Liberal Arts Scholarship", ranging between $10-15K per year, renewable for 4 years (8 semesters). This was a change from prior years in which these "Liberal Arts Scholarships" were discretionary and not offered to ALL Semifinalists.

Of course, as with all scholarships offered, you must attend Emory in order to receive the award.

I just emailed them about it.

I'm guessing/hoping that they'll do the same thing this year that they did last year?

plus there's 2K for National Merit Finalists too ... right??

Up to $2k I believe. If you don't qualify for need aid, they give you a $1k.

I'm really hoping they aren't going to simply subtract my scholarships I'm in the running for from my need-grant. I've been hoping the scholarships would take a bite out of the large amounts of loans I'd have to take out. I'm a bit worried though, because for my estimated award for ED, it appeared as though they just knocked a few thousand off of need-grant to make room for Georgia's HOPE scholarship. If they keep doing that, Scholarships won't do me any good until I rack up over $30K of them and they take away all my need grant before eating away at my loans, work-study, and efc.

Speaking of NMF, aren't decisions supposed to be mailed in early Feb? I guess it's not really nervously anticipated though, since 95% of the semifinalist for National Merit go on to become Finalists.

@ohioguy
How do you know your NMF status already? They don't come out until later right? I mean...we're all just NM semifinalists right now and don't get any money...unless you're assuming you get it or something.

I'm just hoping everything will go well ... I think my SATs and grades are fine ... from what i've heard, getting NMF is largely a matter of turning in your NMSF stuff on time.

Does anyone know when we find out officially?

Feb 1 - High schools are mailed with decisions
Feb 8 - Finalists are mailed at their home address.

"While there is no guarantee, typically semifinalists not selected as finalists are awarded either a John Emory Scholarship (2/3 tuition) or a Liberal Arts Scholarship (10K, 12K, or 14K). You will be notified by the middle of February of your status as a finalist or any award offer."

That was the answer I got from one of the administrators of the scholarship. So most semifinalists will get some sort of scholarship.

^^Thanks phony. Still have 1 question though: Do we have to DO anything for them to advance us to finalist standing or do they just summon another committee to decide?

Nothing else is required of you. We have to sit and wait.

(Which two years ago angered a lot of people because they released semi-finalists and then only gave money to half of them. Since the semis can do nothing but wait around, some thought that Emory should have simply skipped the semi step and notified only those who actually got something.)

So I guess that's why they gave money to everybody they notified last year! I'm guessing (and certainly hoping!) that they'll do the same this year.

Me 2. If I don't get money, I'm definitely NOT going to emory. Waaaay too expensive for me to even consider. Especially with my parents nagging me about how they want me to provide 2/3 of the costs for every college that I want to go to so they only have to contribute 1/3....Like that's going to happen....

Finalist results come through email, right?

I believe they send it through mail cause accepted ED people only got their semi-fi results by mail, as far as I know, and all semi-finalists are accepted so I doubt it would change.

I doubt opus as well because there is no place for Merit Aid Offers on the site, so i guess we must wait it out and watch the mail box... if we are even selected as finalists. T.T

Actually, EDers who got semi-finalist got an email. Nothing showed on on OPUS (still hasn't) but 12 hrs later an email came.

hey everyone, just to let you all know, I got my stuff in the mail. Are there still people who haven't heard yet? I feel for you.

do our counselors receive any info whether or not we made semis or not?
