Emory Scholars

dyou know if we are still eligible for the 2/3 scholarship though?

nevermind, i'll answer my own question, just looked it up. the dean's achievement IS the 2/3 tuition scholarship. dang...........!!! i was sooooooo hoping to go to emory but now theres no chance. in early january, all i got was good news from colleges and stuff, but now i've gotten like 4 bits of bad news in a row- guess i shoulda worked harder on the sat or something.....errrr... soooo disappointed

wow...0 for 5. Emory must hate us.

don't worry guys. I was in the same boat last year: I didn't get selected as a finalist, but I later received the Dean's Achievement Scholarship. In all honesty, after meeting some of the people who were invited to the weekend last year, there really is no difference between those who were finalists, those who were non-finalists, and the rest of the Emory student body. Like admissions at other places, the scholars admission process is a bit unpredictable...you never know what exactly they are looking for. For example, I was a National AP Scholar, a State AP Scholar from Missouri, and had competed in a national economics contest for three years straight, but I was not selected. Do not be disappointed. It is Emory's loss. Trust me: you will receive more exciting opportunities. Take care and good luck when April 1st rolls around.

Thanks for the inspiring words econrobot. They must have done it differently this year because they told us that we weren't selected for the Emory Scholars Program or the Dean's Achievement scholarship, which really really sucks. I would have been able to go with the 2/3 tuition, but it looks like Emory is a dream that I'll have to get over

PS - if i called the admissions office do you think they'd tell me why i wasn't selected besides the general "lots of good applicants" line?

i'd say go for it...you won't know unless you ask.

there were no counselors she could "pass me to" - how wonderfully stated

I'm sorry to everyone who wasn't selected. I don't understand the process either. I wasn't invited to the Foundation Fellows weekend for UGA, but I am going to recieve the 2/3 Emory Scholarship. I'm still a little confused as to how that happened.

To Emory Students - What exactly is the difference in Emory Scholars opportunities available to Dean's Achievement vs. Finalists vs. Full-ride? The email made it seem like I was still just as much of an Emory Scholar as the rest. Is that the case? Is it just the actual scholarship money that is different (like say, Georgia Tech's Presidential Scholarship)? Will I get priority housing/class selection, reimbursement for outings, etc?

Well I may have just answered my own question. It seems like a yes. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Once you're at Emory, all the Scholars are considered equal-you are all given the same opportunities by the program. Congrats on getting the Dean's, and be glad you don't have to go through the interview process, which was a bit nerve-wracking for just about everybody I know.

A torpid lump of depression in a cyclone of self-disappointment.

Everything I’ve worked for and everything I’ve wanted

now Gone.

From my hands into theirs,

Back to my hands destroyed.

I gave it my all, they give me

This.

This revolting letter,

this horrible decision,

this slap in the face.

It swells up behind and

Bursts forth in a torrent.

It is Gone.

It all is gone.

Were you notified of your selection by e-mail or snail mail?

email--congrats gmf

i was shocked i wasn't accepted. 4.0 1480 SAT, lots of ec's. i heard you had to visit there first, which i didn't. how many of you visited who weren't selected? and how many selected who visited?

i called admissions and they said there was such a strong talent pool, but i think its cuz i didn't visit.

dissbs.. i wouldnt beat myself up about not visiting.. it cant be a deciding factor at this level.. in fact, the deciding factors are a bit obscure.

gmf, congrats!! I think the fellowship is more competetive than the scholars program, so its not that odd. the acceptance rates are about the same, but remember that the fellowship has SAT cut offs which probably hurt people. but emory is QUITE an accomplishment, and at a great school. really good job!

okay, i talked to my friend and i feel way better now :) Please disregard horribly written depressing post above ;)

About the visiting, that couldn't have really been a factor. I went to two information sessions at my school, had a one-on-one session with an adcom at my school, and visited emory for information session and campus tour over summer. I've also emailed them non-stop and shown a great deal of interest. I have a 1570 SAT I, 2350 SAT IIs, 4.0uw, ranked 1 of 465 unweighted and weighted, have taken 9 AP classes (5s on all 4 tests taken so far), 14 honors classes, fairly good ECs, and had a great teacher rec and I didn't even make the 2/3 tuition cut.

The process is random and unforgiving. Unluckily, I probably won't be able to go to Emory now, but at least I know I got accepted :)

PS - anyone know how many 2/3 awards there were? I thought that there were like 100 2/3 and then 70 full tuition to full ride, but all the people getting rejected on this board makes that seem unlikely

dissbs, did you call to ask for an explanation of why you weren't selected? and all they told you was that there was a "really strong applicant pool"? If that's the case, I think I'm going to give up trying to call them tomorrow to find out why i was rejected...

why put yourself through that? so they can list how we arent good enough.. i'd just let it pass, you are obviously very qualified, and i hope the best for you somewhere else (im probably not going to emory now either)

me neither.... it seems so odd. there were tons of people on cc that announced they were semifinalists but only a few have posted about their finalist status so far... and plus, all of our stats seemed so good and we still got rejected from the scholarship... i thought SAT scores maybe had something to do with it, since my older bro got a full tuition and he had a 1590-- but then i saw yall with 1570s and 1580s and so there must be some other reason.

i think its pretty darn cruel to even have an announcement of semifinalists. for many things, if they announce u are a semifinalist, the reason is to give more app materials to fill out. it would hurt so much less if emory would have just announced the finalists in the first place and given the other 230 (or whatever) of us admission to the college, since thats what they pretty much did... i really had my hopes up after becoming a semifinalist.

Rani - I don't think my SAT hurt me for the Fellowship, though I'd agree they're probably a more competitive bunch.

To everyone - Thanks for the congratulations. As for me, I didn't "officially" visit, but I tend to doubt that the visit could be weighed THAT heavily. Now I sort of wish I had done the tour and stuff. I did, however, accept the invitation of Emory's band director to sit in on a rehearsal in their band building back in January (it wasn't Emory's band; it was a local one.) Maybe that qualified? I don't know.
