Emory Scholars

Yes, my d received the same letter in the envelope with her official notification that she hadn't progressed to finalist status. It surprised me because Emory had been very on top of things when she applied and sent her departmental info from the 3 majors she indicated an interest in, which weren't science-related.

Though she was disappointed about the Scholars decision, she's not resentful and still would consider Emory if we decide there's a way to pay for it. But last night she said that if she'd been able to get a 2/3 scholarship, her decision would probably have been made. This despite the fact that Emory was the only school on her list we couldn't visit (love the video, though!), and was the last one she added to her list.

I appreciate sinsam's description above of the rigorous nature of the competition - helps put the disappointment in perspective. Fortunately, she's had good luck with decisions so far - has been offered a full scholarship at her financial safety and been accepted at one top public, with a likely letter from another. So she can afford to go somewhere! Still waiting on several other decisions.

Hi,
I have been reading all these posts and I can really sympathize with what everyone must be going through. I'm also from St Andrews in the UK, and like Flash33 I'm studying at Emory next year. I just thought I should add a little story, which is that when I applied for the scholarship (that I subsequently won), the results at each interview stage were posted on a door in a stairwell at the university, and all hopeful students were had to gather round and desperately hope their name was still on the list... No codes or numbers either; if you didn't make it everyone else there knew. Thats a pretty interesting way to announce results but I'm glad to say I was lucky...

I was just curious whether results are completely confidential in the US now, or whether they still go up on a board/in the paper? I'm talking about graduation results, everything really... over here it's slowly disappearing... Is that a good thing do you reckon?

yeah, for the list of finalists on the door one girl couldn't make herself look and just stood a flight of stairs up looking petrified while everyone else ran up to the door.... that was way scarier than any results by email or post.

thats how they do theatre at some places.. but not for college.

As far as admission into universities, yes the communications are completely confidential, and between the student and the uni. It could be done by e-mail, postal mail, or logging onto a website with your password.

As far as Public High Schools go, (the equivalent of your private schools?), report cards are mailed home, individual tests/scores are handed to each student in the classroom, usually face-down, so others cannot see. So I would say that privacy is given much consideration here. Some information will be posted on bulletin boards in the High School, e.g. after a student accepts a school's invitation to attend, and the student informs our High School Office, that decision will be posted.

Used to be, until last year, that if a student was accepted to 12 schools, all 12 names were posted. That was changed this year, after protests from students who did not apply to or get into as many.

Some of the information that gets posted, only uses student I.D. numbers, and no names. I cannot imagine that the way your school does it is pleasant.

That isn't so different to our university system now; our exam results are all communicated online these days so the exam results are completely confidential, and ID numbers are used for some things. In the past it was just the board but thats all nearly gone now, which was why it was so surprising that the results of the scholarship interviews in question were posted like that. I can personally say I enjoyed the experience because I was successful, but I was terrified at the time!

Is everyone who got the finalist letter going to the weekend? S is signed up & has his plane ticket.

Yulsie- yes my daughter is very excited about the finalist weekend. Where is your son coming from.

Hi! I went to Finalist Weekend. Your sons and daughters probably know me. I was just wondering if anyone knew when the final decisions for Woodruff Scholars come out. Does anyone know?

Hello,

I went to the finalists weekend last year, got the woodruff, but turned it down to go to UNC-CH instead...but I do know that, if they havent' changed the process this year, some dean or other should call you within a few days of the weekend. That was the most exciting phone call of my life. Congratulations -- the Woodruff and the others) are amazing scholarships.

What happens to our scholarship money if we choose not to attend Emory? Does it get reassigned to other students, or is it just saved till the next year?

It doesn't get reassigned. They save it until next year or they're more willing to give you more money if you didn't get the Woodruff. For example, you could ask them to match the money given by another university of about the same prestige.

Naur, may I ask how you know that? S got full tuition, but I was thinking the same thing - if one of the Woodruff awardees turns Emory down, to ask if they would consider raising the amount of his scholarship. What office would you approach, admissions or financial aid?

I know because I asked two current scholars the exact same question the first day I was there, and that's what they told me. Although if you happen get further official confirmation, please tell me.

Colleges simply re-absord scholarships that are not accepted. In fact, they plan for non-accepted scholarships in the same way that they plan for a number of students not accepting admission. At they college I teach in, we will transfer specifically-dedicated scholarships (e.g. "must be given to a nursing student who lives in one of these 3 counties") because those are specifically funded by local people and we publicize those scholarship winners each year-the people that fund them look for that. However, we don't transfer general scholarships that are not accepted each year.

Remember that these things are not really money transferring hands, they are just accounting figures. I went to graduate school at Emory (1976-1981) on a fellowship and I simply received a notice that I had no fees to pay each semester.

Absolutely. Merit money that has been turned down (by students choosing not to attend), simply goes back into the system for next year. It is not offered to students who ask for more, nor to those who were next in line but did not make finalist.....

i was really bored so i made a list of who actually got anything out of the process

Slipstream,

Thanks for posting that helpful info.

Did you get any $ at all from Emory? Do you have any idea why with your great stats you didn't get selected?

Where did you end up getting accepted and did any places offer you merit $? Where are you going to college, and are you happy there?

What was your top choice when you applied?

Do you know if applying for Emory Scholars helps an applicants chances of admission to Emory (even if they are truley not Scholar material)? My DD's GC wants her to apply for scholars but her SAT's are only 1330...she dosen't have a chance based on these stats. Is it worth her time for her to fill out the 700 word essay only to be not selected or should she do it since it may help her admissions chances to Emory?

It probably helps by showing serious interest in the college. Since she has to be nominated by her h.s., it also is somewhat of an honor to be nominated for it, particularly if other students from her h.s. are applying and were not nominated.
