Hi! If anyone has a moment or would be willing to I’d like to see what my chances might be for getting accepted to Emory as a transfer applicant in the fall of 2019. I’m asking now because I need to start working on my essays and gathering my recommendations for my application in early 2019. I am dead set on transferring from my current relatively smaller University primarily due to the lack of research opportunities, desire to go to a larger school with a “good” name, and other personal reasons. Also, other schools I will definitely apply to include UGA, Auburn, and maybe Georgia Tech, I’d just like to see if it would be worth sending an application to Emory or not. I’ve seen some “chance me!” threads for Emory 2018 and quite a few high GPA people were turned down, though they didn’t list must else besides that so it worried me a little.
Stats:
-Major: Biology (Pre-Med; very set on Orthopedic Hand Surgery)
Schools Applying to: Emory, UGA, Auburn, maybe some others
-College GPA: 3.81 (68 credit hours; 60 earned through dual enrollment, 8 earned from last summer, currently taking 16 credits and then will take another 16 next semester in order to meet general non-dual enrollment credit requirements to transfer for all schools interested; upward trend)
-High School GPA: 3.5 (UW)
-SAT: 1250 (Yes I realize its crap and not on average with freshman applicants but because of the amount of credits I have I should be able to wave them at least for Emory or UGA as a transfer from what I’ve researched and emailed their faculty asking about)
-Employment: Paid tutor at my current university (16hrs a week), I primarily do physics, calc1/calc2/algebra, and literature.
-Awards/Honors: 3x Dean’s List, 2x President’s List
-Recommendations: Orthopedic Hand Surgeon who went to Emory for undergrad and Harvard for medical (this is by far my best one but I know they’re more concerned with teacher recs I believe, so I’m not sure whether or not to include him), 1 Physics Professor from GT, 1 Biology Professor, 1 Calculus Professor, 1 potentially from the head of the Science Department if I’m lucky
-Research: I’ll be starting on a lizard behavior research project along with another plant-sugar related one next semester but none at the moment
-Volunteering: 40ish recorded hours in a pain clinic in a nearby hospital; I hope to have at least 80-100 by the application period, its just a bit difficult with my current schedule and the times they’re open
-Shadowing (not sure if relevant): around 70 hours at large orthopedic hand surgery facility (I get to watch surgeries and come to the pre-ops which are my favorite things), 15 dentist, 9 pediatrics
-Hobbies (potential stuff to incorporate into essays): Microscopy (I enjoy dissecting insects and small vertebrates to try and learn about their anatomy and record my processes in a journal, also a lot of fungi), Cartography, World History, Tennis, Running (I went from 265lb to 160lb in a year of running)
-Clubs: None, considering joining a international club at the uni but I’m not sure if it would help or not since I wouldn’t be in any high position
-Languages besides English: German (dual national), a bit of Latin
Instruments: None
-Family connections to these schools: None
-Potential Struggles: I’m worried about my essay writing abilities, I don’t think I’m a very interesting person and I don’t have many unique life stories that could really be useful in essays. I’ll to seek help for that. Also transferring as a biology major is probably a bit more competitive to a school like Emory I would assume.
-Race: White Male
I realize its impossible to know exactly if I have a shot or not but if anyone would be willing to assist I’d appreciate it greaty! I hope this wasn’t too much or too little, this is my first time posting here.
