Hey guys just visited Emory and fell in love with the campus. Wondering if y’all could help me shed some light as to my chances of getting accepted(I’m a junior). Here goes.
GPA: 3.8 uw 4.1 w
ACT: 32 (Second try I’m testing again to try to pull it up to a 33)
EC’s: Editor and chief of school newspaper, Pacemaker winning publication(3 Years on staff) staff reporter for independent city newspaper (2 years on staff) , debate nationals qualifier (4 years of debate) , Vice President Model U.N (4 years of M.U.N) Model U.N Secretariat (2 years)
Outside experience: Intern for law firm in my hometown, intern for governor campaign and senatorial campaign in my state (both losses but I don’t think that matters on my application)
Course load: 9 AP’s by the end of high school career… mostly in history classes
I don’t know if this is a lot to go off of, but prep scholar says that the average stats for Emory Acceptance is 30 ACT, 3.7 GPA so does that mean I’m on the inside track? Would love answers. Thanks!
@Fingerscrossed17 : No, for admits that is low. The matriculates usually end up with those stats, but they aim higher in terms of who they admit. Admits have about a 32 and maybe more like 3.8UW, so you are competitive but not in the 75%: http://apply.emory.edu/discover/fastfacts.php
Emory admits like 5k per year and above is the stats of those admitted. You are pretty much on the median with either 32 or 33 and maybe a little lower or on the median for UW GPA.
I think you have a really solid chance of getting in, but Emory is always a crapshoot. If you write an amazing essay that shows your personality and talent I would consider you a definite yes for Oxford College of Emory and a strong candidate for Emory University.
Thanks for all the details! How much will my extra curricular help my application? Will they at all? What other colleges are comparable or a slight step off that I could definitely see as safer bets? @lhs2017 @bernie12
Also forgot to mention that I am an assistant debate coach for a debate team in New York via skype and will spend the summer working for a video game designer in new york
@Fingerscrossed17 : If you plan on continuing those things in any capacity and can maybe link them to things valued at Emory, that would help.
If you wanted to add some good school that might not quite have the reputation of schools in Emory’s tier (like 15-25 USNWR, except Georgetown of course which gets a boost because of its influence in politics and business I guess and Berkeley which is just well…Berkeley), maybe look at Northeastern. They want to quickly increase their reputation so have been relying on an admissions scheme more heavily tied to stats. They have stats very similar or slightly higher than Emory (remember, that stats wise, Emory is an aberration among peer schools. It has a similar caliber but not the pull they have mainly because of differences in financial aid packages and MUCH bigger attempts to recruit low income students which will naturally lower the score range. The two are actually connected. Emory can get away with not having super high stats because it has a very large endowment and has a very strong reputation in all 3 big buck pre-professions, performing as well as or better than its near peers, so it basically regarded as similar to closely ranked privates), and yours are likely on par. I cannot recommend anywhere else without knowing what your potential academic interests are. You said most APs are in history, but you may have just done that because you know you were good at that so I cannot assume that is what you want to do in college.
@bernie12 @LHS2017
Over the past months, I’ve done a number of things to further enhance my application to colleges.
I’ve improved my ACT score from a 32 to a 33 and my GPA (UW) from a 3.8 to a 3.85.
I’ve also been accepted into the AAJA J camp, the top journalism summer program in the country, with an 8% acceptance rate nationally. I was voted in to the position President of my schools chapter of National Honors Society and have 11 AP courses rather than 9.
How much do these changes benefit my resume?
Thanks
@fingerscrossed19 : Excellent, but first. I hope you love more than the campus (I just re-read that opening statement). Is there anything you can see yourself doing at Emory that can be done well or nurtured there (as in did you like anything other than it being kind of pretty, because I have to tell you, lots of construction will occur when you are there if admitted)? Also, do not tell us what the acceptance rate of that opp. is (Emory will go like: “that is nice”). We want to know what you plan to do when there. Merely getting it isn’t that interesting. You need to be able to tell adcoms what it did for you. 11 vs. 9 APs is really just splitting hairs and the president position is fairly standard for those applying to these types of schools (as is any type of honor society affiliation). Stick with discussing and playing up your writing and interest in journalism. It will help much more. This isn’t a formulaic process. You are qualified, but you have to be able to sell yourself, your experiences, and how you can help Emory, and it you. It isn’t about your resume at this point.
@Fingerscrossed17
If you write some great essays showing your personality
ED1 80-85% chance
ED2 60-65% chance
RD 40-50% chance
