I do not believe I’ll be accepting the waitlist offer. I really like Emory, but Oxford is just too isolated for me with not much to do in Covington. The school I’m committed to now (Rutgers) isn’t my favorite by any means, but I think there’s a lot more to do there. I do plan to transfer out of Rutgers, and I will re-apply to Emory, so maybe I will be able to spend 3 years there without having to go through Oxford first.
@katnissjul I like your plan. It’s well thought out and you did your homework. Oxford works for a lot of people, but not everyone. Good luck at Rutgers and Emory will be there next year for you if things work out.
We just got the admission letter as well as the Financial Aid and they gave us Scholarship… We will go for the School It is a dream school… Major Media and possibly adding Film… we are beyond excited for the opportunity … we do have a scholarship from an outside organization that could cover an Arabic Minor so that might help with tuition…
We have researched this school in particular for the past 6 months, and applied specifically to get there. We come from LA, have lived in a big city and attended a large high school, so interested in experiencing different perspective in life… My son was looking for a very small customized learning. The smaller classes, and the opportunity for research, the direct connections to professors will build a stronger foundation and seems the right path for us at this moment … Also, my son was in ASB for the past 2 years, and knowing that leadership will be a skill that he can continue at Oxford is a big plus.
We are about 90% sure we are taking the offer…
Good luck to all
Congratulations Nonomom to your son and your family!
I’m not sure what I’m doing anymore. I got the aid back and it’s honestly really good. They’re giving me an extension to decide because I could not see my aid. I’m really reconsidering it. I’m completely lost and really not sure what I’m gonna do.
Son just got offered a spot off the Oxford waitlist. He deposited at Macalester. We live north of Atlanta, so Oxford would be close to home vs. very far away. Can’t really think about it one way or the other until we see financial aid (tomorrow); if it’s close to or better than Mac’s it’s going to be a tough decision. Making it tougher is the fact that we’re leaving for a trip to England on Wednesday, and he has to decide by Friday. Not great timing, Oxford!
@kokotg congratulations to your son … we have committed yesterday and very excited about it … good luck to everyone waiting
I keep going back and forth and I’m having trouble deciding. But I feel like I just have to do it. I don’t know. I hated the college I’m committed to so much and it kind of feels like I finally have a chance. Even if I hate it, there’s nothing tethering me to the college. I can transfer. I think I’m gonna do it. Oxford ‘21 and Emory ‘23!
@katnissjul good luck with your decision. I do remember your original decision process (affordability issue with Tulane and deciding against Rochester) and read some posts on these Emory boards. Considering you want biology research, I can understand why you are now leaning to attending Oxford / Emory. @bernie12 can probably articulate better than me why you may have arrived at the right answer here. I don’t know scientific research at all and, despite being an Emory grad and parent, I have never set foot on Oxford soil. Originally, I thought your plan to attend Rutgers for a year, at a cheap in state rate, and then transfer to Emory’s main campus for your sophomore year made sense.
@ljberkow I think both decisions make sense in a way, but seeing the financial aid package from Oxford made me realize that I just couldn’t turn it down. The cost is the same for both colleges so I felt like it was a really great deal. In the end, if I absolutely hated Oxford, transferring is also an option there and there’s nothing that is requiring me to stay. So I feel like I’m taking a risk here, but I think it’s a risk worth taking.
@katnissjul : All this stuff is a risk and none of it will be perfect (despite the depiction of movies/other media, and marketing materials, college is not usually some 4 year summer camp or dream land and nor is it really supposed to be, especially for a high achiever or anyone who wants to truly get something meaningful out of it. So I don’t advise going to a place like Oxford, being petty, comparing to those expectations and then looking for problems and reasons to “hate” it. I say this because, believe it or not, some people seem to do stuff like this with their initial college choice and end up self-sabotaging their own experience) I do, as @ljberkow think you made an excellent decision, but you’ll need to make sure that you are deliberate and continue to make excellent decisions when possible at Oxford and Emory to optimize your development and enjoyment I guess. But for that track, you are in great hands and have many opps to receive a truly excellent education in the classroom (Oxford and ECAS are ultra serious about STEM education and Oxford can even be a little more innovative because of the lower enrollment numbers) and outside of it (via research, whatever ECs, and hopefully a decent/solid social life). Have a positive attitude (especially with the discount you allude to) and get ready to maximize your experience! Congratulations on making a decision. Now you finally know where you are going to college!
My last thought is not to go into the experience with the idea that you might transfer out, but to embrace it and make friends and get involved as if it’s a 4-year plan. That’s really the best way to deal with the risk, which is really only social in nature.
@bernie12 what you wrote was amazing I truly thank you … the one thing that everyone seems to agree on is that Emory Oxford is quality education… we are beyond thankful for this great opportunity.
Bernie is an excellent resource as a younger alumni who really understands all parts of Emory, not just the sciences. Bernie also understands admissions, trends, housing, Emory master planning, etc.
I am so excited to have this opportunity. When I asked on Oxford’s facebook page, sooo many people reached out to me and tried to convince me to come. It feels so nice to be happy with where I’m going to college. And to be able to explore a new state and a new city!
The two best things here is that you are going to Oxford and Emory and also that you feel really good about your decision and your future. Hopefully, someday you’ll look back at your somewhat rocky road to Emory and feel really good about it and appreciate more because of this process.
Does anyone know when will all the decisions be released for this year? I’m an international student waitlisted by both campus, and i’m worried that if the result won’t be posted till mid-July as said in the email, then it’ll be too late for getting my visa and health report.
On the same boat here. Applied for aid too. Hopefully they get back to us internationals soon or else visa etc will be a nightmare.
Same here! Has any international been taken off so far?
has anyone received an email from emory recently?
