Oxford College at Emory University-Class of 2013

Hey guys, i just wanted to know who got into this school and if you go here already can you tell me a little more about it and your experiences? Also why is it now that all the Emory waitlisted kids are now applying to Oxford? lol

Oh and i love this school!

Before i posted this is the wrong forum, that is why I am now putting it in the right one...

^ my D has been accepted at Oxford but she is waiting for Emory-college who waitlisted her( act :31,sat:2000,sat II:800,680,680 gpa:3.82 wgpa:5.8!!! she is very disappointed!!) well the FA package is pretty good at Oxford and she’ll go eventually to be able to go to Emory-college for junior and senior years!! that is her only reason!! she is trying to convince herself that Oxforsd has a lot of to offer but it’s hard to believe. for example she wanted to study abroad( major IR). At Emory-college there are a lot of options to choose from concerning her major but at Oxford very limited choices, not even possibility to go abroad!! the same for the living: only 1 place to eat, located in the middle of nowhere… the only positive side will be the size (750 students!!) and the size of the class (20per class)… well, we don’t have much choices unfortunatly…It depends what you are looking for in a college experience.

My daughter is a freshman at Oxford this year. I can tell you Oxford does have a lot to offer. Study abroad options are definitely available at Oxford. My D will be attending the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art in the fall. All Emory University students can apply for study abroad programs after completing three sememsters.

^ good to know! i knew that Emory college has a lot of to offer but the Oxford’s site is so plain that i didn’t find anything interesting concerning the study abroad.

Oxford is a really good school and nice place to be at. I hear the people are very friendly and they seemed that way when i visited it. The town is not that deserted there is actually civilization and stores there; it shocked me because i thought it was deserted too. The school offers good leaderhsip qualities, in which students will benefit from when going to Oxford. Students have told me when they go to Emory, the end up doing way better than the native Emory college kids. I don’t think it is a big deal where a person starts at Emory it still the same thing, just for a few minor differences.

Oxford is a great place to go;i can’t wait, and im sure your daughter will like it.

bajangurl,

You will be a great asset to Oxford and Emory. You have a great attitude and outlook on college life. You’ll make lots of friends and no doubt will take advantage of the special educational opportunites that Oxford provides.

Good luck with the rest of your senior year.

bajangurl,

I LOVE this school too:)
the town is way more deserted than the one that I live in so that was a shock, i guess. But once I visited the campus I fell in love with it, everyone was soooo friendly and the environment was very close-knit and “cute” too. I prefer it to the main Emory for the first 2 years since I need that kind of environment. I can’t wait to see you and everyone in the fall
P.S. Just paid my deposit today YAY!!

bajangurl, I agree with motherofmine. You sound like the type of student who will do very well at Oxford and get the most out of the experience. Best wishes to you!!

missy411, I’m glad you took the time to visit the campus. Your’re sure to do well also. A positive attitude is so nice to see  Congratulations !!

Gamom2,
I have two questions.
The first is whether the students must go somewhere when the residence halls are closed. If that is true, that means students will go home four times every year (thanksgiving, winter break, spring break and summer).
The second one is whether the Oxford college does not provide meals on weekend.

NJTZ, yes, the students must leave when the residence halls are closed. The majority of the students are local, so I know some oos students have stayed with friends for breaks. I guess that can’t be avoided.

The cafeteria is open on the weekends, however. It’s not 24 hours, but it is open for meals.

^ are you sure the majority of the student are locals? or is more like 50/50.
when they move for breaks do they have to move all their stuffs from the room or it’s ok to just stay in the same room for the year and just close the doors? also do they have microawes and fridges in the dorm? and what kind of rooms do they offer? doubles and triples? coed or not? i went to the site but there are no pictures available and it’s not very well detailed. If someone can answer… thank you! also i can tell by posts and site that Oxford is surrounded by churches or at least people attending Oxford are quite religious … can someone confirm that? My D is not a religious person at all!! my husband is jewish and i’m catholic we didn’t want our kids to commit in only one direction… so they are free to choose and my D which is 17 already choose not to believe!! can it be a problem for her not to have a religion at Oxford ?

There’s a definite chance I’ll go. I’ll probably visit campus this month (gotta make plans soon though because I live in Oregon lol). In the end it’ll come down to Oxford, Seattle U, and Robert Morris University (with a nice scholarship).

Robert Morris in PA? If so, I live about 30 minutes from the campus.

Yup, that’s the one. I was accepted to their Actuarial Science program

That’s cool. I sent an application there the other day as another safety school. There’s a lot of schools in the Pittsburgh area to attend surprisingly. I’m awaiting my decision for oxford since Emory rejected my ass haha. I’m deciding between wake forest (waitlist), UVA (waitlist), IU kelly school of business, and hopefully oxford if I’m accepted. I visited Emory this past summer though and liked it. I’m not sure if Oxford is the environment for me because I’m a bit of a party goer.

It’s my safety too lol. I’ll be surprised if you don’t get into Oxford because if you’re good enough to not get rejected from UVA (especially OOS) then you’re set for getting into most schools.

I hope that’s the case. Carnegie Mellon and Chapel Hill thought otherwise haha. I might be making a trip to UVA and try to meet with the dean. An application doesn’t justify my worthiness of acceptance atleast i don’t believe so. Perfect test scores can’t determine the type of person you are or whether your capable of making it in the real world. Many are so sheltered, i mean i’ve traveled all over the world for my service hours and played every sport imaginable throughout high school and worked since i was 12. So i believe it’s justified if my focus wasn’t entirely on perfect test scores and science and math competitions. I hope i didn’t offend anyone i just can’t pinpoint how they come across some of their admission decisions.

^ i agree with you the graduate2009!! some of their decisions didn’t make sense to me (looking at my D’s HS and on CC)

57% of students from outside Georgia
36% of students from outside the Southeast

sorry I was incorrect about the % of GA students. I should have checked that first. The majority of d’s friends are from GA.
