Emory vs. University of Michigan, Ann Arbor

If you had to choose between Emory and University of Michigan, which would you choose and why? Assume you are Out of State and that you are paying full tuition for either one.

which school at UM? LSA, Engineering, etc.?

Where do you want to spend 4 years-the North or South? Culture, climate, distance to home, all sorts of nonacademic factors. Then there are the academics- depends on your major... Also the campus atmosphere... No location or school is perfect, you want a good fit. Prioritize your list of needs and wants and do the comparison. Good luck.

These two schools are very different in terms of environment: physically, academically, socially.

It would be helpful if you'd share more information about things you want in a college, possible area of study, the type of person you are. Then I believe folks on this board could provide some very useful insights.

Emory if price isn't an issue

Huge difference between schools! Emory is small, U of M is huge. You cannot walk the entire campus at U of M easily, but you can at Emory. U of M has the typical large-school culture, and it is midwestern in flavor. Sports are very important to the student body at U of M, not so much at Emory. Emory has lots of well-off people. U of M has some, but you don't see it so much due to the size. Kids I know at U of M sometimes have trouble finding their place due to size, but then again, there are lots of places to find because of the size! Classes are giant at U of M (although they get smaller as student progresses), smaller at Emory --- and profs are generally more approachable at the smaller schools. Kids at Honors College & Engineering College at U of M seem to have better social lives right off the bat, compared to those in the general population of the school, from what I have seen. However, everything depends on the individual. Some love large schools like U of M, some prefer smaller schools like Emory. U of M's campus is actually split by the city --- so lots of people around who have nothing to do with the school. That is cool for some kids, not so much for others. Both have excellent reputations.

Hard to compare them in the abstract, but ...

I say U of M. Slightly less expensive, more diverse, better school spirit/sports scene, classic college town atmosphere. When you graduate, better name recognition and alumni network.

Emory certainly has its advantages (much nicer weather, no "state-run" atmosphere, etc.). So you can't go wrong.
