I'm not sure about the Greek scene and southerness at Vandy
I love Atlanta but I have to go to Oxford (main campus only gave me a smaller scholarship). I'm not sure how Oxfod will affect prestige, but I'm doing medicine, so I don't think it will matter. if I don't do medicine, I will do IBanking, so how good is Goizueta for that? I also like the diversity at Emory, which is lacking at the other place.</p>

<p>I only know about Vandy as my D didn't consider Emory (no engineering program). I can tell you that Vandy is a terrific school, well respected and full of great people. That being said I'm sure the same can be said for Emory (her ex-BF goes to Emory and loves it). The greek scene at Vandy is really overblown. About 50% of the kids are greek but they don't have houses to live in. They stay in standard student housing so you don't get that big greek v. GDI's you get elsewhere. My daughter is not greek but still goes to frat parties on a regular basis. It is very apparent but not divisive.</p>
<p>If all things academic are equal (both have what you want to study) I think you have to visit both schools and decide where you feel most comfortable. 4 years is a long time. Saying any of the top 20 schools is so far above one or the other is almost impossible. The prestige and educational differences are minimal when you boil it down. I would say the same thing if you were debating Duke v. Rice. IMHO it comes down to where do you want to be. Atlanta and Nashville are both first rate cities...albeit Atlanta is much, much larger. You say your daughter goes to greek parties regularly. the thing is, I'm not much into partying and might get annoyed if getting trashed on a weekly/nightly basis is so importnat to the social scene. what have you got to say on this?</p>
<p>There are plenty of other things to do besides go to the greek parties. My point was more about the inclusiveness of the campus. I don't delude myself into thinking she doesn't drink but there is this misconception that you have to spend your downtime at Vandy doing keggers. It's not the case. That is a generality of any school perceived as being greek. Another example is she is not an athlete yet hangs out with the athletes (tennis, golf, baseball, etc...). Admittedly she is not the most outgoing person in the world and really struggled with friends for a while but it had more to do with her not putting herself out there than anything else. She would have struggled with that anywhere and likely would have been worse off at some other schools. I obviously am very biased towards Vandy but only because it has been a great experience.</p>
<p>I'm at Emory and I love it. I started off doing pre-med but quickly realized that IBanking is the way for me. The premed track at emory is very difficult but once you graduate you are looked at very well. As far as the b-school, we were ranked #3 in the nation for a reason. The b-school is amazing in terms of how great the classes are taught and the level of the administrators. Administrators are important in making sure that good recruiters from top bulge brackets come and continue coming to emory. Within the last 3 years that amount of interst for emory (especially business school has boomed) As far as Oxford v Emory main campus, both are good in their own way. When you graduate oxford it is easy to be successful at emory. Also, there are shuttles between the two campuses and people sometimes do come and hang out at emory from oxford. as far as networkin g(important if you go on the b-school track) it is better at oxford since there are less kids.</p>
<p>I do understand that Emory has a top-knotch business school. Folks who go to Vandy usually end up in econ (one of the things they are known for). Just depends on which campus and surroundings you like best. I don't think you can go wrong with either. If they had engineering my son would be looking at Emory as well as Vandy.</p>
<p>In southeast, Emory wins for business. However, even though
emory is ranked #5 UG business program, it is more difficult to find jobs out of the south, and IB's hotspot is northeast. It can be done, but you will have to take the initiative. </p>
<p>Emory loses in engineering, duh, and I think it wins in premed. I prefer
Atlanta.</p>
<p>Not sure, but I think Emory premed classes are not graded on a curve, making it easier to get an A. i saw this on another thread, maybe a current student could comment.</p>
