Emory's local reputation (in ATL and Georgia)

Hello...There has been a lot of talk about Emory's reputation nationally and internationally. However, I was wondering whether people, in general, in ATL and in Georgia know that Emory is a top school. Do they regard it as prestigious? For example, I know Texans think Rice is extremely prestigious and Rice enjoys a great reputation there. Can the same be said for Emory? I would appreciate some answers from students from that area, or current students or even alum. How is Emory generally viewed in ATL and in Georgia? Thanks!

Yes-- Emory’s recognition has been growing exponentially outside of the region, but Emory has always been recognized as an excellent school. That’s one of the reasons why Coke (which is based in Atlanta) has given so much money to Emory. Also, Emory Healthcare is the largest healthcare provider in Georgia, which means that tons of people who go to Emory’s many hospitals and clinics who have nothing to do with Emory learn about Emory.

More comments please?

Dude, everyone in Ga. knows that Emory is prestigious. If you are a top student in Ga., you often consider either Georgia Tech or Emory (and maybe UGA honors). While many do realize that Emory is a top school, you, as normal, have the throngs of people who view it as extremely elite (and rather difficult to get into) and expensive. Many of these are hardcore Tech and UGA fans. While prestigious, only 20% of people at Emory are from Georgia (which isn’t that bad, as Emory does not actually compete against UGA and GT for students). Yeah, but if you say you are going to Emory, you normally get a lot of wows if you are from Ga. A lot of people will ask also your stats. and stuff to get a demonstration of the students admitted. I don’t know if Tech has the same reputation (though still excellent) even though we basically admit students with the same type of stats.

Everyone knows Emory in Georgia. Everyone. My hick family in south Georgia does, my classmates do, my old friends in Atlanta do.

It’s just less attainable than Georgia Tech & UGA.
