<p>I plan on majoring in biology, and I know that Emory has a strong premed. What exactly makes it strong though?</p>
<p>Strong science departments? Great professors? Good premed advisers? Multiple research/volunteer activities? Connections with organizations like the CDC? Does it offer MCAT prep classes or anything?</p>
<p>And how is the grading for premed courses? Bell curved? Inflated? Deflated?</p>
<p>are students often stressed out? does it have huge workloads? Does Emory medical school favor students from its undergrad? what's the average gpa for premeds at emory?</p>
<p>I heard that premed at Emory is cut throat...and that it's very tough. I heard that around 80-90% of students start out premed, but only 15-20% finish premed...so yeah, it's definitely tough work! oh well, I know I'm going premed, so I'll definitely be in that 15-20% lol</p>
<p>I'm willing to work hard to finish the premed route. I just hope the cut throat competition does not include people sabotaging each other's labs or not sharing notes or studying with each other. I like some competition, but I hope it's not extreme. Anyone else have info about the competition between premed students?</p>
<p>Keeping a high GPA isn't that difficult, and the required classes aren't cutthroat. Yes, Emory favors its own students in admissions for medical school.</p>
<p>Never heard my D complain about any cutthroat atmosphere. To the contrary she has study groups in most classes. In the sciences has found prof, TAs, tutors and fellow students go out of their way to help her. Science does not come easily to her and she could not ask for a more supportive environment.</p>
<p>MJay: the 10% (13% actually) figure comes from princetonreview.com and Emory used to have it on their own site. Emory, at least a couple years back, sent a higher percentage of students to medical school than any other college that year (Hopkins was #2).</p>
<p>The 27% seems pretty plausible considering only like 60% of people applying to medical school actually get in, and many more people drop the pre-med track before getting that far into the process.</p>
<p>The best part about Emory premed is the lack of any sort of a curve. It is possible for everyone to make an A in a given class. There are no quotas to fill for any grade. This fosters a great cooperative learning environment. In my experience, the atmosphere is definitely NOT cutthroat. </p>
<p>Many people drop out of premed, but not because their grades aren't high enough. Most drop because they find something they like more. For instance, I have quite a few friends who started out as premed but later switched to public health.</p>
<p>I'm glad to hear that there's no weird curve (like bell). Cooperative learning sounds great. I'm most likely going to attend Emory fall of 2008. Sounds great =)</p>
