Emphasis of Training at Harrt

(Helping spread the questions.)

We are starting to understand that most BFA Musical Theatre programs try very hard to train “triple threat” performers, but in the end, one of the three disciplines tends to emerge as slightly more prominent or emphasized than the others, and there is usually a second, then third.

For current Harrt School students (or parents, if you know), what would you say is the primary emphasis of your training at Harrt?

Also, can you describe the type of training you get in each of the three disciplines? For example, in music, how much time and what sort of training in voice, theory, repertoire, piano, etc. Do you learn both “classical” MT styles as well as contemporary pop styles? When and how?

For acting, do you explore the different approaches, and in what depth? Do you train with the acting BFA’s or separately? Do you get a lot of straight acting training, or is most of the acting training in the context of “acting the song?”

In dance, can more advanced dancers take classes with the Dance majors? How much time is devoted to “specialty” dance like tap, partnering, hip hop, etc?

Sometimes different students have different experiences, so it would be awesome to hear from several!!

Hi! I am a current MT1, so I will answer to the best of my knowledge, but the best person to answer your questions is Ashley Malcom the Hartt Theatre Division Coordinator amalcom@hartford.edu

Hartt students get:
2 years of Ballet, Jazz, and Tap (but you can take more classes if you have available credits or audit dance classes)
4 years of private voice lessons (50min class once a week as well as a ‘masterclass’ in which all of the students of a vocal teacher get together and perform for each other), 3 years of vocal coaching (starting 2nd year)
3.5 years of acting from multiple different teachers
2 years of voice and speech (diction, projection, IPA, dialects, etc)
1 year of music theory
1.5 years of ear training (pitch and sight singing)
1 year of piano

Acting and MT majors take acting together for the first year (and maybe 1st semester 2nd year). Acting classes for MTs are all about acting not ‘acting the song’ (that is what masterclass and vocal coaching are for)

All students learn different styles of music in their voice lessons, each year for juries, students are required to sing from different years (MT1’a are required to sing a pre 1930’s song, MT2’s from 1930-1950, etc)

I think that the Hartt program does a great job of creating a ‘triple threat’ and it is a fantastic program!
