Emphasis on Perfect Grades?

Hi! I had a question regarding applications for anyone that’s experienced in applying here - especially that highly selective 16% class of 2020.

I feel that my application is strong, with tons of ECs and volunteering, along with large name projects. However, my main concern are my grades.

I have a 3.7 GPA - 91 UW, 95 W - with four B’s and a C that I’m trying my best to push up in Physics. Would my grades serve as a reason for a rejection, despite having every other aspect be strong?

Thank you!

Any replies…? This has a ton of views, LOL.

I don’t think anyone knows the answer to your question. You can’t get into Barnard if you don’t apply, and Barnard does have a holistic review process. But given your grades, you should probably consider Barnard a reach.

D16 was waitlisted. Her standardized test scores were a lot higher than others who were accepted. She had tons of ECs too. I have zero insight into how Barnard chooses its students. Good luck.

I think it’s not just “tons of ECs” but also the type and quality of EC’s… and the story they tell consistent with the high school coursework / grades/ essays/ and to a lesser extent test scores.

Berry, if your grades have a pattern that correspond to a “lopsided” profile of strength vs. weakness – that is consistent with your interests-- it might not be as much of a detriment as you fear. That is, if you look like an arts/humanities type of student, and your weakness is math & physics – that’s not necessarily going to kill your app.

I was recently admitted to Barnard, and I’m planning to be a Physics major. Although my Physics grade is an A, my SAT Subject Score for Physics was pretty low (I think it was in the 500’s or 400’s?). Actually, overall my test scores weren’t super strong, but I think my GPA balanced it out.

If I had to say what the determining factor for being admitted into Barnard it would be showing a lot of interest (I visited/called/interviewed whenever I could), and for really showing my passions & goals through my essay. Barnard is holistic, and there were many women with higher test scores & grades that were denied–so I would really hit home on your essays, because those are what’s going to make you stand out.

Hey @charmandquark! So many congratulations on your Barnard acceptance! You seem super cool from what I’ve gleaned from your various postings on the very niche Barnard section of CC, and your profile picture is AMAZING  Not to hijack this post, but I was wondering what your score breakdown for your composite SAT was, because I noticed my math score was similar to your subject test score (I topped out at 550 after two of the old tests…womp womp, though my other section scores were high), and our profiles are similar (showing lots of interest, high GPA, etc). Also, did you end up doing multiple interviews? I’ve heard about people who have done alumna and on-campus, but I wasn’t sure if it was only for special circumstances. Apologies for the interrogation, and, again, congrats! Use those snazzy new Barnard emojis with aplomb.

@rougesneakers Dude thank you! <3 I’m flattered that you deem me as cool, aha.

My SAT was an 1860, 640 in CR, 620 in Math, and 600 in Writing. (I took the “old” SAT, with the 2400 as the highest score, so it’ll be different from your scores I believe).

I only did one interview—I should have done an interview when I visited via a fly-out program but the spots filled up super quick. I did a phone interview with an alumna–I didn’t think it went super well, but I did get the chance to talk about my passions and explicitly say that Barnard was my first choice.

If you live nearby you could probably do an on-campus interview, I also know that during Barnard Bound (a fly out program you should check out if you’re eligible!) they offer on-campus interviews.
