I did an internship at a small software firm last summer, and my supervisor is willing to write me a recommendation for my college applications.

Is the employer recommendation attached to the main common app? Or are they emailed separately to the institutions? I couldn't find info about this on the university sites where I am applying (Carnegie Mellon, Stanford, Cornell, University of Michigan)

Also, are the universities going to check the validity of the company? The place where I interned was a fairly small company, so I'm not sure if that will help me or not.

That list of schools usually want academic teachers to give a recommendation, like one math and one english, or one math and one science. Some schools will let you submit a 3rd, but be careful not to give them more info than they want. I would only submit that employer recommendation if you have the option to send in an add’l recommendation beyond the 1 or 2 required academic recommendations AND your intended major matches what you did at this software firm.

Yup, well atleast CMU and Stanford do state that they will look at employer recommendations. And my major matches exactly with what I did at the software firm!
