Hello all, I'm an incoming transfer to UVA and I was hoping you all could provide some insight as to what the best/most popular jobs for undergrads at UVA are. All help is appreciated.

most of the jobs are reserved for people on work study - are those the jobs you're asking about? i know a lot of people who work in the libraries too, some not on work study.

I'm specifically looking for non work study jobs. I was surfing the net and it seems that the dining jobs are pretty easy to get and start at like $9.50.

a good number of students work retail at barracks road or wait tables on the corner -- of course, these jobs don't always pay particularly well... I made about 7.50 an hour working retail, and with waiting tables its highly dependent on tips of course.

yea if you're not work study you'll have better luck outside of uva
i do have a friend who does work study at the dining hall but im not sure exactly what the process is sorry :

Just go work in the library over at the circulation desk, which is the best way to work while being able to study at the same time.

Is it hard to get a job working as a lab assistant if you're not work-study?

It's not that hard as professors love to have students work in their labs. Just go up to one and ask if they are looking for a lab assistant. I'm working in a lab right now for the experience and some leeway for my senior thesis.

A friend of mine suggested an odd, but easy "job": participate in the UVA Hospital clinical studies/trials. Some are 1-2 visit studies, each visit lasting anywhere from 10min to 2 hours, that you can earn anywhere from $5-$350. And this isn't selling an organ type stuff, but more give a saliva sample, draw blood, or let them test the flexibility of a limb. If you're looking for quick money without obligation, or just want to help out, look into it. http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/internet/clinical_trials/

yea there are always tons of psych/cold/etc studies going on, good money, though ive never done any of them my friends think its fun/worth it
