In my last post I mentioned that I wanted to get an EMT-B certification, however, I have realized that this is a long and expensive process. My local volunteer fire department does offer free training, but it’s very far away and takes up to 6 months for completion. I preferably want to get certified before school starts again (looking for 1-3 month programs), so it doesn’t interfere with my studies as much and so I have enough time to get actual ambulance riding experience . I saw some posts on CC where people have completed EMT training within 2-4 weeks, and was wondering if anyone knows a program like that in Northern VA.
If there’s any high school students (or parents) who got an EMT-B certification who live in NOVA, can you share how you did it?
Have you checked with your local community college? Most CCs offer EMT-B classes for a very reasonable price. The course is usually a semester-long class., but a summer intensive program (5 day/week, 6 hrs/day) is usually only 4-5 weeks long. The only 2 week long EMT classes I’ve heard of are for recertification of already licensed EMTs.
Getting licensed as EMT-B requires more than just taking the class, you need to take and pass a state or national exam that includes both a written exam and practicum. These may or may not be offered at the end of the class. It’s not uncommon for states to only offer the licensing exams every couple of weeks or once a month.
If your college will be located in a state that is NOT Virginia, be aware that not all states recognize reciprocity for EMT licensing. Even if the state does have reciprocity, you will still usually need to take a state-specific refresher/retraining class to get a license in a different state. The scope of practice for EMTs varies by state so you need to take a short class to learn about state-specific regulations before you can be licensed in a state different than the one you took your training in.
Thank you for your advice! I think I found a place to get my EMT-B certification.
