Do you rely on energy drinks?

I do. I think I'm hooked ....

Do you rely on energy drinks?

I do. I think I'm hooked ....

Only time I’ve ever used 'em was on two occasions. Once, before I went on a crazy run with some friends…

Right after eating a ridiculous Cracker Barrel breakfast. Yeah, those two don’t really mix. It was a bad combination, I had to stop to let it out a few times hehe. The second time was when I was a camp councilor this summer for some crazy kids. Took a couple of Monster lo-cal’s to keep me going.

Nope, I
ve never tried them, never want to. I have friends who drink them, and they say the crashes are something that
s not the greatest. I don
t know…they (the drinks) kind of scare me. I
ll rely on coffee instead.

I used them in the past but I’ve built up such a caffeine tolerance from constantly drinking soda that I don’t get too much of a kick anymore. I just drink them for the taste/caffeine addiction I have.

To quote the Irish drinking song “The Wild Rover”: no, nay, never.

Never touched one. And don’t plan on doing so.

Sent from my HTC One X using CC

I like to avoid the extra sugar in my diet, so no.

I only ever drink them with friends at sleepovers so we can stay up until 6 :)

I never drink them, but I think I might buy a few packs of 5 Hour Energy to help me through the rough nights.

^Man, that stuff is really bad for you.

^ Probably. But I just have to get through this year.

Nah. I tried a 5 Hour Energy during Lollapalooza and almost puked. Similar incidents with most other energy drinks. If I need to a pick-me-up of sorts, I tend to go for strong coffee. A few espressos usually does the trick.

I would drink coffee, but my parents are (unfortunately) Mormon, so that’s not an option.

EDIT: I did love my lattes at Brown this summer, though.

I <3 coffee. But I don’t do energy drinks. There are far too many occurrences of young people dropping dead after drinking one.

Not energy drinks, but powerbars for life.

Never have an energy drink, and I have coffee once every other month (just for taste not for energy.)

My mom is against both, because she thinks coffee makes you short, and that energy drinks are like drugs.

She’ll say “if you need energy take vitamin B12” without realizing that five hour energy consists of various vitamin Bs.

@Studious - you should be fine taking 5 hour energy. My only advice is to watch out for the niacin flush that may occur with chugging an entire bottle of 5 hour energy at once. I’ve been taking 5 HE since March and I’m fine and healthy.

The only thing I’m concerned about is my wallet because those little shots cost near $3. The effect is probably more psychological - “oh, look at that, it’s so expensive - it must work,” and “oh, look at the fancy ingredients - it HAS to work.” As my uncle, a psychiatrist, once said in his lectures, you have to charge the patient enough so that they’ll be motivated to follow your advice. Charge too little and they’ll take you as a joke. Charge too much and they’ll go bankrupt. Charge just the right amount so they take you seriously.

Also, the ingredients on some of the energy drinks are ridiculous. Don’t even get me started on the scientific studies done on energy drinks. I saw one energy drink advertising an 1mg “enzyme blend” of amylase, lipase, protease, cellulase, and lactase.

StudiousMaximus - please put a cap on the mirth.

Amylase: found en masse in our saliva, and is secreted by our pancreas. Breaks down carbohydrates, which are a source of energy. Not sure though if a sub-one-milligram dose helps.

Lipase: breaks down fats. Bile already does this. Well, bile emulsifies fats.

Protease: breaks down proteins. Not sure why we would want this; we don’t rely on protein as a main source of energy. It’s also not as if our stomach doesn’t already secrete pepsin (which does the same thing when converted to its active form - pepsinogen).

Cellulase: well, thanks for helping us digest an otherwise indigestible carbohydrate! That would have been some healthy and probably much needed fiber otherwise!

Lactase: for those who are lactose-intolerant?

Despite all this, I’m still hooked on energy drinks. The taste is simply awesome (I love Monster, and 5 HE isn’t bad either).

I’ll occasionally have a Monster Absolute Zero (low carb and zero sugar). But that’s only when i have a field trip after school and when i get home i’m going to be swamped.

Studious, correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought Mormons were iffy on caffeinated drinks as a whole. If that’s so, how are 5 Hour Energy’s okay with your parents?

^ Caffeinated drinks are fine with most Mormons. It’s just coffee and tea that are strictly not allowed.
