Being declared as a Finance major at my University we get to choose specific tracks to pursue within finance (i.e: Corporate, Investment Banking, Quantitative, Energy etc.) I have narrowed it down to two possible tracks: Energy or Quantitative. I've always been interested in working with the commodity of oil since its kind of a cross between science and business in a way and with all types of energy (not necessarily oil) being an important commodity now and for many years to come I see this as a very stable and interesting career path. On the other hand I enjoyed statistics and modelling classes during my college career and I always wanted to work with Hedge Funds and Mutual Funds and things of that nature and Quantitative Finance is ideal for those types of jobs. Looking at salary potential, job outlook, and opportunities in the future which track should I pursue?

Deciding between specific specializations within finance is splitting hairs. It really depends on what end up enjoying more! Both fields have great potentials for salary and job outlook.

If I had to give a personal opinion, I’d say energy finance is probably a little more employable because quantitative finance (which is related often to trading) is being regulated a lot now, but this is just my opinion. Do whichever you end up enjoying. Honestly, either specialization could go into either field. Most companies train you anyway. Your job as a job applicant is simply to prove you will be able to learn whatever it is the company does.

It’s a decision only you can make, and there’s no wrong answer.
