Engineering admission by major

Rankings of easiest to hardest majors to get into

All of them are hard to get into. Note that the adcom doesn’t even consider second-choice Engineering Majors; Viterbi is very competitive. Perhaps the “easiest” may be undecided. Nonetheless, it’s pretty tough.

why would undecided be the easiest. I wouldn’t it be the hardest

At USC, each school/department has a certain percentage of students they can admit. Viterbi has a certain rate they have to follow, so it’s about the same acceptance rate across all engineering majors. Undecided doesn’t help in this case.

I heard this from the engineering admissions officers at a showcase.

I’m debating between CS in viterbi and CS/ physics in dornsife. Should I just apply to dornsife if I want to maximize my acceptance probability?

If I were you, I would do CS Viterbi as #1 and CS/Physics as #2.

Do you not think they will be less inclined to admit me to my second choice major?

I know for a fact that Viterbi does not even look at #2. It may be different for Dornsife. You should call them.

Can I ask what your sons stats where?

Actually, USC’s Viterbi engineering majors are the same to get into. Each school in USC has a certain percentage of students or number of students that they can admit, but it doesn’t matter which major gets which percentage of the admit
