An employer is not going to care about your hobbies as long as they don’t interfere too much with your job. I played semi-pro hockey early in my engineering career; games on weekends, one practice mid-week at night. Never had a problem. But then I never went and wanted to work part time. That would have been a problem.
My concern is the time and effort required to develop an engineer. When I first started out as an engineer I was told by an older engineer that it would take about 5 years before my total work output would be greater than the investment in on-the-job-training that went into me. You can debate the amount of time as much as you want, the real number is unknown. But the point is valid. There is a significant of knowledge that must be acquired after you start on the job. No way I would have ever hired a part time new grad engineer. Not worth the investment, especially if there was a good chance they were going to leave before I could get a positive return on my investment. Not that it doesn’t happen that someone leaves early, but it would have always started out looking like it would be a long term employment.
