Engineering and social life

My D was admitted to Cornell Engineering. I know the program is demanding, but do most Engineering majors manage to enjoy the Cornell social life on campus?

Most definitely! My daughter is a junior, and her major is electrical and computer engineering. She’s also in the chorus (and managed this year’s spring tour) and she is this year’s musical director for an a cappella group - both very demanding time-wise. And, until this semester, she worked at least 10 hours a week. Her second year in the chorus, she signed on as their social director - so not only was she attending all the parties, she was also planning them and doing most of the cleaning up. She’s smart and motivated, but not any more so than the majority of her peers. So, don’t worry! Just make sure your daughter takes it easy her first semester. I think the hardest thing for most kids is being in a school with so many other talented kids; all of a sudden, your child is average (which is a good thing in my opinion). With grades being curved, it takes a bit to get used to NOT getting fantastic grades all the time. It’s a bit of a shock, but I’ve yet to hear of a kid not rising to the occasion.

With over 800 different clubs, she’s bound to find stuff she’s interested in! I’m sure she’ll be happy. It’s a fantastic school. Congrats!

Thanks for the input! Your daughter sounds amazing!

No more amazing than yours, I’m sure!

I’m not an engineering student myself (I’m Arts&Sciences), but I have many friends who are. Engineering is a ton of work (so are other science/technical majors) and sure it is hard, but everyone I know still has time to join clubs, eat lunch together with friends & spend time going out on the weekends, etc. :)

^
Depends. Some Engineers never leave their rooms, but those are usually the top kids.

My friend rarely leaves his room except to eat and only has a 3.2 in Engineering.

My D is also a junior engineer. She is in a sorority and participates in some clubs and club sports. She has a lot of friends outside of engineering. She loves Cornell and has plenty of social opportunities. She works extremely hard at school, she also has an on campus job and her extracurricular activities. Mi think that is the beauty of Cornell. If you want to socialize with students outside of your major, there are lots of opportunities to do so. There are also project teams and tons of clubs. There is always a lot to do, but one has to prioritize because the engineering work is extremely time consuming but also rewarding.
