Would anyone recommend this if a school had an ABET-accredited engineering program? Has anyone out there done this and if so, please tell why you chose liberal arts school over a regular university and how your experience was. Thank you.

The likely answer is “it depends” – specifically on which “liberal arts college” and which “regular university” you are comparing.

I am currently attending an LAC where I am completing an ABET accredited degree in engineering. I chose a LAC because I really liked the school’s environment and they had everything was looking for. The great things about being in a smaller program are the individual attention from profs, camaraderie among engineering students, and all the profs are really focused on teaching mainly, but still conduct research. I am in my second year and am currently the point person on two different projects in two different research labs and there is no way this would have happened at a larger research university. The main down side is there is less variety in the course offerings, however most LAC’s with engineering also have consortiums where you can take more classes. Also, if you know you want to do a specific kind of engineering look closely at the professors’ research interests to see if any of them are similar to yours. If not, that college may not be a good fit academically.
